Just bought 2 desktop computers and a Netgear wireless router. Everything is working but having trouble getting the router to work. OK, I have DSL and the router is a Netgear N300. I put in the disk supplied with the router and it goes so far and then I hit trouble. It tells me the problem is most likely the login information is incorrect. On the IP address i used 192.168.0.1, used the same on the default gateway and the preferred DNS server. The subnet mask I have used 255.255.255.0 I know the problem has to be something small but it is just driving me nuts. Just got DSL working straight through the modem and the IP address there is 192.168.0.1 PLEASE if anyone would be so nice as to help me i would appreciate it very much. I am not very smart when it comes to computers but I am trying.
THANKS AGAIN, Jeff ( [email protected])

192.168.0.1 is fine for the gateway (router) address - it's probably the default. If your ISP supports DHCP (most common) then you should set the router to obtain the IP address and DNS server automatically. Enable DHCP server in the router. In the Connections setting for the PCs, TCP/IP properties set to obtain IP address and DNS server automatically.

Your ISP will provide the IP and DNS server addresses when you connect. The router will give your PCs their LAN addresses, probably close to 192.168.0.1

I should add that if you want to access the router setup after the initial settings, put 192.168.0.1 in the address bar of your browser and you will get the router login.

The above instructions are very brief. If you cannot figure them out, post again.

like I was trying to say - I really dont understand what he was talking about- I reset the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 and also to 255.255.0.0 and neither of these worked, still getting same message. The Modem (Siemens, Speedstream 4100) has these addresses and it works good there but really need the router

Have you completed the Setup Wizard? It may be easier to fix the settings directly than go back to the Wizard.

I have a copy of the Netgear N300 Setup Manual pdf. Did something similar come with the router? The manual does not have any details about the settings menus. I'll see if I can find another manual on the Internet. Without those details it will be difficult to explain the settings.

Edit: Can you specify the exact router model, there are a number in the series. This problem sounds remarkably similar to Russb's issues. What's up with Netgear?

I put together some instructions but first the settings of the modem have to be sorted out. You say that its address is 192.168.0.1. The default is 192.168.254.254. Did you make that change or how was it made?

I found a manual via the WNR model number. I have the pdf for NETGEAR Wireless-N300 Router WNR2000v2 User Manual. There is a v3 but hopefully v2 will do.

Forgetting what the modem address is, the instructions below are for a router address 192.168.1.1 which I believe is the default. Once the address has been changed you can use that to log in to the router

Get one PC going first. Connect to router with Ethernet. Assumed WAN port of router connected to the modem. The instructions are identical to the Russb thread I mentioned, modified.

1. Open a new window or tab in your browser
2. In the address bar of your browser (where the http address of the site you are connected to appears), type "http://www.routerlogin.net", no quotes
3. A login screen will appear. Enter the Username and Password that you have set in the Wizard and hit OK.
4. Bypass any firmware update screens by clicking Cancel or Back.
5. Change the router address to the default - see instructions 17-22
6. Get to the Basic Settings page. I assume no login to the ISP is required. If one is required, checking that option will bring up the screen to enter the information.
7. In the IP address, check "Get automatically from ISP"
8. In the DNS server, check "Get automatically from ISP"
9. Router MAC address leave at default
10. You have to save the settings. Click Apply.

Leave browser:
11. Go to the LAN connection of the PC. Steps may vary with OS.
12. Select Properties of the connection.
13. Select Internet Protocol TCP/IP, click Properties. Check IP and DNS to obtain addresses automatically. Do not enter any addresses or submasks
14. Back out of the settings (Close) until back at desktop or whatever
15. Open a new window or tab in your browser and try accessing the Internet.
16. If that is successful repeat steps 11-15 with the other PC.

This is the first stage to connecting. The wireless comes next if that is how you intend to connect both PCs. Then there is setting up the home network between PCs. We'll look at those once the basic router is set up.

To check your router IP address:
17. Login to router, type "http://www.routerlogin.net", no quotes in your browser (or 192.168.1.1 once set), Advanced, LAN Setup
18. IP address 192.168.1.1
19. IP subnet mask 255.255.255.0
20. Check Router as DHCP server
21. Starting address 192.168.1.2, ending address 192.168.1.254
22. Apply
