ntldr is missing

Hello Guys :D

One of my friends give me his laptop to get it fixed. He said the battery won't charge and he want me to check if this is the battery issue or the DC power jack is loose. So as soon as I get the laptop I turn it on and the only thing that pop out is the HP Compag logo and then the laptop restarts. But right before it restarts the screen blinks and I can see a "ntldr is missing" command but it just a blink. Also when I turn on the laptop it tries to load from CD right away. I went to BIOS change the boot up sequence so it boot up from HDD first and still same thing.
I think his HDD is dead. What you guys can suggest me to check? I already tried to put a Windows XP CD in the drive but it won't read it just restarts all the time.
Laptop is HP Compaq Presario R3000.
 
Insert XP disc and go into recovery console (press R during setup) then run fixboot!

type help in the command line if you get stuck..
 
Actually, what is happening is the computer is automatically restarting when it enounters the error, which is the NTLDR problem. The best (and easiest way) to fix this is to just throw in the windows XP cd, and boot it up, and then go and just repair that install.

There is a command in the Recovery Console, but I don't know it. If someone else does, chime in. I can verify that the repair method works because I have done it before.

And actually, I believe to repair it, you have to hit the button for a new install, and then it will search for previous installations and offer for you to just repair it instead.

EDIT: I'll leave this here in case ghost gave you the wrong command. I don't know if that works with NTLDR or not. He's probably right. And his way is a touch easier. My way will require reinstalling some devices, although that's a fairly straightforward process.

If its just that file the fixboot will be fine.

While you are there it might be worth doing a check disk too..

command: chkdsk
 
I don't know if you guys have read my whole post but I wrote that the laptop won't read the CD. I did change the boot up sequence to boot first from CD but still nothing. The CD is good. Original one.
 
Well, i've seen bad hard drive cause really weird issues so I don't know. You may want to try removing and reinserting the ram.

However, if there is a charging or power issue then i would say there is internal damage somewhere and the laptop is shot. Try removing the hard drive first and see what happens.
