hi there....
i just wanted to no if it would be worth it to choose a 6870 over a 6850.... is there much difference between them? Also what nvidia card rivals these two performance wise?

thanks in advance :)

seems like help is rare now a days. I'm as lost as you on Nvidia rivals...espeically since it seems like they all have A LOT lower stream processing units than ATI.

Looks like the 6870 just has higher stream processors, ~100mhz higher core clock. As far as real world performance, they are probabaly not far off from each other.
What games do you wan to play? If you google the name of hte game the card, you will usually pull up how many FPS you get on what settings.

This is the difference I pulled up from newegg:

Thats a bit much since you only have like 19 posts and surely cant have a very good grasp on the forum, Help isn't rare at all

First nvidia the cores are of a completely different architecture and are therefore not compatible on a apples to apples basis as currently nvidia are the market leaders on both single gpu cards and multi gpu cards, AMD on the other hand offer better bang for buck.

Second, to the op the HD6870 is defiantly better, it is between 10-14 % better than the HD6850 but does obviously cost more, you can see here, please feel free to check the rest of the review

Depends on your usage as to what would suit you best, what do you do on your computer and what games do you play now and what do want to play in the future?

thanks for that guys :)
illl be playing games like crysis, gta iv, CoD, battlefield and a few others..... pretty much all the newer games

6870 isn't that much better than a 6850 is, and it's reported to be an unfavorable choice for crossfire. There are a good number of shaders on the 6870 giving you some more speed, but I don't think you'd be at all unhappy with a 6850. You could just raise the memory and core clocks up a bit if you ever had a problem. For those games however, you might be wanting something more beefy, like a 6950 or a 6970. Not saying you won't do fine with a 68xx card but it's a consideration.

yer ive heard that the 6870 hasnt been all to good with crossfire.... but it would still do a good job with a single card yer?
one of the 6870's ive been looking at is a MSI Radeon HD6870 1GB Hawk which will set me back $249 australian link here: http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=193_1164&products_id=16740
is it good with what it has to offer?
and with the 6950's they are getting a bit out of my price range but i will still consider them

It's a great mid level card if that's what you're in the market for. Also consider the gtx460 ssc+ edition. It is a mean contender in the midrange and the factory overclocks on it put it on par with a gtx470, which is a beast also. Here is a site I often visit to get the no-BS lowdown on various cards, you can compare the ones you're interested in and see if it's the one for you. They don't automatically list this edition under the comparable cards, so you have to select the 1gb version and adjust the clocks according to specs of the ssc+. I had a really tough time picking my card out due to the existence of this, so you might want to fool around with the comparison tool for awhile.

The HD6870 is the card to go with.
It performs almost as well as the GTX 470 and in many benchmarks even performs better than it.It definitely beats the GTX 460.
It also consumes less power compared to the NVIDIA GTX 470.

wow i hate graphic cards lol they are so confusing but thanks for all ur help guys :)
i think ill just go with the 6870 for now n change it in the future if i need to
thanks again :)

What resolution are you gaming at? Thats a huge factor.

Honestly if you want bang for the buck then find a used 5870 and you'd be much better off. A used 5870 will be cheaper than a new 6870 and it's actually a stronger card. They are going for right around $180-200 or so USD right now.

or even go for the 5770. they're around 130 AU and i've got a single that can run NFS Shift at 1260-1080 with full eye candy easily. too bad that shift is a bad game :P
