Problem with Desktop

Hey guys,

My sister's desktop (its a compaq presario sr1601nx) isn't working quite right. When I go to power it on, the CPU fan kicks into high, and no video output is shown. I took out the modem card because I read that could be the problem, but other then that, I'm stumped. I'm almost 100% sure its not the PSU, because when I tried it in another desktop, it started up fine.

Ideas?

Thanks,
Bkribbs.

Try removing and reinserting the memory sticks and see if that helps. Remove any nonessential hardware not needed to bootup. You may also want to unhook the hard drive as well to see if it will boot up. Bad hardware can make a system act up in different ways.

Yeah, I tried all the memory. And I just unplugged the cd and dvd drive, and it didn't work. Then, I took out the hard drive. Nope. What else?

Have you tried resetting the cmos? Remove power from the power supply, remove cmos battery, press the power button on the case a few times to discharge power then wait a few minutes. Then insert battery and reconnect power and try again.

Would the waiting a few minutes matter? I admit to not waiting. I'll try that later, I'm heading to my brother's now. I'll try that tonight.

The only other suggestion I have is to make sure all the cable connections are tight going to the motherboard. Make sure the 4pin cpu power connector is tight. Might want to pull everything out and reconnect to be sure.

I've reconnected everything as best as I can. I can't figure out how to get the CPU out though. I'll see if I can grab another PSU to try, but I don't think that's the problem. I'll also try a new battery.

Anyone have any other ideas?

You said there was no video but the CPU fan was loud? It might actually be the video card fan, unless you checked that it was the CPU. In my experience most video cards that don't show video also have the fan at 100%, unless that's seized up too :P

No its definitely the CPU fan. I had the case open and watched it. Plus there is no video card :P . Anyone have any ideas on what else to do?

stick a video card in it to see if it post that way. could be a bad IPU chip in it. As for the CPU fan, is it only recently starting at 100%, or did it always do that. At least on the desktops that I have had, the CPU fan always started out at 100% and then settled down after POST was done.

Alright. And... I have no clue.

Great. I have no cards to test. The 2 I have are AGP. And I only have PCI and one PCI-e slots. So. I may try to borrow parts from a friend or something.

So I'm going to change the battery, try a new video card, and anything else?

I suppose you could try rebuilding the system outside of your case so you can easily access everything.
