Which cpu is better

Just be aware you'd need to get a new motherboard, as that i5 is socket LGA 1155 and the E8400 is socket LGA 775
 
The Core i5 2400 Sandy Bridge Processor has about three times more processing power than the Core 2 Duo E8400.

I would advise you to look at the Core i5 2400 over the i5 2500. It is $20 less and has about the same processing power.

yea i forgot to mention i am also going to upgrade the motherboard and ram, was looking at these.......any advise is welcome

I am probably going to be looking to run at least 8gb as that is what I am currently running, if there is a better motherboard that you know of please let me know..but not really looking to spend more than $150
 
With the I5 2400 the max you can ever do is probably 3.5ghz or so. With a 2500k (not just 2500) most people can run 4.4ghz as a daily OC with a good cooler....4ghz with the stock cooler.

I can vouch for that! Thanks to 87dtna!

4.4ghz using the Thermaltake Frio @ 1.315v.

After 15 minutes of using Prime95 my cores reached these max temps!

59, 66, 65, 65 using Real Temp.

EDIT: 1.250v

well let me tell you first hand i built four computers for an electric co op with the i5 in them and wow. they are quite the little chip run great and cool. the stock fan and heat sink is very small though. if you plan to overclock you will definitively need a larger one.
