wireless adapter not connecting

hi, i recently moved my computer which was connected via ethenet to my router from the room with the router in so i had to use an old wireless adapter i found lying around. the problem is that although the new room is right next to the wireless router i cannot seem to get a strong signal and when i do it usually cuts off every so often.
does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve my connection? im thinking i may just need a better adapter.

What adapter is it? What operating system are you using? Did you install the latest drivers for it?

have you tried changing the wireless channel on the router it could be interferance issues, microwaves, wireless phones etc

how would i go about doing this?
and yes i have the latest drivers for it and im running xp. it also a sweex wireless lan USB 2.0 adapter 54 mbps (at least thats what is says on it).
im also having the same problem with a different adapter on a different computer, although thats further away from the router.

basically you need to go on your routers page, im not 100% sure how to get into that quickly on XP but if you do Run, then cmd, then type ipconfig and type in your IP address, should be like xxx.xxx.xxx.x into your browsers bar at the top it should bring up your routers page. Btw what router have you got?

i think its a netgear router, but im not sure.
I have found out how to change the channel, im just going through each one to see which gives me the best signal.

One last question. my router and my computer (with the wireless adapter) are both under desks. might i get a better signal if i move them into open space, or wont it make any difference?

thanks for the replies.

To add to Johnb35's response, a friend of mine had signal problems in their house. I moved the router from under the desk to a shelf above and it cured the problem completely.

thanks for the replies. i just moved my computer from under my desk and im getting nearly double the speed. just got to find a longer cable for my router before i can move it from where it currently is.
