Router/Modem question. (probably stupid)

I have a home network, set up with one desktop and two laptops. I literally JUST got through hooking up the desktop. Right now, a modem is connected through a Coax cable, and a wireless router is connected with an ethernet cable plugged into the "ethernet" port on the modem. The desktop is plugged into the router via ethernet cord.

I'm wanting to find a way to plug the desktop up to my Modem (faster speeds) rather than my router, but still keeping the router on the network. However, the modem only has one port for an ethernet cable, which is currently being used to hook up the router. There are 2 RJ 11 ports on the modem though. Could I run an RJ 11 from my computer to the modem, and still be able to access internet? I just need to know if I need to purchase a new modem with two ethernet ports? Or is there an alternate way to plug up my router? help!

Yeah, big speed difference. Talking 800 - 1000 kpbs being plugged in through the router, and 9000 - 1200 plugged in through the modem.

Rather than ordering online, do you think Staples should have one? Or a basic computer store?

I don't think that will work. He can't get internet from modem and router at the same time, I don't think anyway. I'm thinking this would be an ip address conflict.

Didn't think of that, so probably.

If it IS that big a deal for you, then you could get a wireless cable modem instead. It's like a router/modem all built into one.

I just received an alert that stated "IP Adress conflict" and I performed a simple Release/Renew, and no such problem exists anymore. Is there anything I can dO?

And To johN: Its an RCA Broadband digital modem. Its the standard modem the ISP provided for us.

I didn't want the modem name, I need the router model number.

The release/renew might work until you try getting internet from a pc that is attached to the router.

Oh! Sorry. Its a Netgear RangeMax WPN824 v3. Would assigning a static address be better than the release/renew command?

I'm confused as to why the splitter wouldn't work. Or is it just best to get an all in one router/modem?

That is an older router, you may want to try udpating the firmware for the router. Have you tried just doing a reset on the router to see if that regains your speeds?

That was the first thing I tried to do, was check for an update for the firmware, and there isn't one available. I just plugged a RJ 11 cable from my Computer to my modem, and it increased my speeds to about 5-6k so I think I can settle for that.

..Unless there is a simple solution to getting my full 10-12k

Sorry, but an rj11 cable will not get you internet. RJ11 cable is what brings dsl to your modem and nothing else. rj11 can be used for dial up internet but not broadband. What is the firmware version on your router?

Then I don't know why it was suddenly increased! I'm using www.testmy.net to test my speed. Earlier today it was 800 kpbs. Just a few minutes ago it was 6000 kpbs.

I can't tell what version of firmware is installed, but I i'm connecting to my router via internet, and one of the options on the homescreen is "Router Upgrade." I'm clicking that, and that brings up a page that says "Check here for upgrades" and I click check, and a window brings up a message that states "No New Firmware Version Available"
