This HP DV9720us Pavilion laptop was giving to me when the owner bought a new Laptop.
The 17" screen is dead. With the help of this board I have changed the priority things that should be first to replace and I'm back to square one and $150 in the hole. I can sell the dead HP for parts and get all my money back BUT, I'm trying to learn the basics about laptops and LCD screen repair.

The HP DV9720us works great on a separate monitor, great. internet everything works but the LCD screen.

I repace the 17" screen, still dead
I replaced the power inverter for the LCD, still dead.
And today I changed the LCD screen cable, still the LCD screen is dead.

Does anyone have any ideas what to do next?

I don't give up easy, but I need help to under stand the problem and the options.

I was told before that if the side port monitor works the graphics on the motherboard is good. These units have a high death rate due to overheating,
but everthing works except the builtin LCD screen.

have you hocked it up to external monitor and see if laptop is working? sorry not trying to joke here just want to make sure, cause if laptop is running and everything is working than want to make sure it's not the video card.

Is there a physical switch select the internal and external monitor? if there is maybe it stuck on external monitor or bad.

I've gone through the Fn key+F4 tap and I'm hoping for a deeper understanding od the interworkings of the HP laptop.

Yes, everything works with a side port external monitor, internet, HD, Keys...Everything works but the LCD screen.

I was told the graphics is built in to the motherboard and if it was bad the external monitor would not work, but it works perfectly.

The new LCD screen, the new power inverter for the LCD, and a new lCD screen cable, still nothing on the LCD. Blank screen, nothing with a flashlight, no icons hidden in the darkness.

Any ideas to do next?

Thanks,

Rod

if youve tried the inverter and ribbon, and the flashlight trick dont work, then you need a replacement LCD.

The LCD screen is new...

if its working on external monitor, then your gpu is fine. The LCD is new, and all the connections are new. Its gotta be a issue between your GPU and where the ribbon cable connects to the motherboard

This is pretty much what I told him the first time around. Assuming none of the replacement parts are bad, you've pretty much exhausted all of the options other than replacing the motherboard.
