You could do a print screen and post it but it would probably be too small for me to see. How old is this system? Some of the older XP system's can't be upgraded to vista without having issues. Is this a custom built machine or a store bought pc? Make and model?

Vista home premium is the OS that came installed with it.
It's around 4yrs old.My dad gave it to me.It kept shuting itself off.He keeps thinking its the power adapter jack, but I checked it and its fine.Been running it all day without the battery. No problems. But when I try to run a music or movie cd it will shutoff.
I did the factory restore where its set back from the year he got it.Been running as many updates as I can.It has not been shuting down.I have to unplug it from the wall to get it go off.Turn it back on and it finishes updates.
Figured I should give you some more detail about it.Its a decent laptop.I don't want to trash it or sell it.Im on it right now.It works good.Just won't shutdown, and won't play cds or dvds w/o shuting itself off(when it does it,it str8 shuts off.No logoff & shutdown.Just instant black screen.)

The way you were talking in your first post it sounded like it had xp on it and you upgraded to vista. Do you have recovery cd's available? You can try reinstalling the OS and aps and see if that fixes it. If there are no recovery cd's then there should be a recovery partition.

No cd's.I will lookup how to do the recovery partition.Don't want to waste your time asking how to do that.If I do it will I lose my programs?

Yes you will. Doing a recovery will put the laptop back to the day you got it before installing anything.

Thats kinda what I did the first day it was given to me.It was where I hit f8 on boot.Went into recovery options.Did the full factory restore option, took every program off.

edit:Sorry.Im not good with newer OSs.Been using xp since I had a pc and never had any problems with it.

Should I give it a shot again. And just keep updating w/o adding any programs till its done?I just got impatient. After doing updates for 2 days I couldn't help it lol.It does like 98 updates the first time after I do the recovery. And its like the energizer bunny from their. They just kept coming.

If after you install windows, make sure it shuts down properly. Then start downloading updates. Check after each set of updates. If it shuts down after all updates then start reinstalling programs and check afterwards. Keep me posted on your results.

I might be geting windows vista ultimate to use.
But I got a problem.Laptop shutsdown everytime I insert a dvd or music cd.I went on youtube to find troubleshoots, and delted a registry entry that vista is known to do in the cd drives section of registry.
Just tried to play a music cd.It actualy read a cd this time without an instant shutoff finaly.Media center actualy opened up and it played 3sec of the 1st track then poof...instant shutoff.Ugh man this is irratating.Could the OS be causing this, from the way it is right now?

When the cd is read and starts to play,it spins very fast and is kinda noisy.I think it would probably slowdown if the laptop would stay on long enough while it plays.Im sure the cd/dvd drive is fine.My dad didn't use it much. And if it wasen't working it wouldn't read anything.I keep thinking its got to be the OS.Cause my dad has watched a few dvd movies on it using the exact same power supply im using now.

It's either overheating or there is an electrical problem somewhere in the laptop that is making it shut down. I doubt reinstalling windows will do anything now.

Well I have fixed it:)!Guess what it was....?The power supply:o.I asked my dad how many he had & guess he has 3 for the laptop. The OEM had the tip cutoff and he couldn't find it.But the other is a rocket fish universal.Tip was cutoff, but in the box.Spliced it together, didn't solder yet.Found the right tip to fit & bam!Works perfectly now:D.When I select shutdown,it logsoff in 1-2sec then shutsdown soon as you see"shutting down" lol.Very fast.
Plays music cd fine in media player, but media center keeps closing on me.
Thats all I need to fix now.

Edit:The PSU I was using,I thought it was the gateway OEM.Was wrong. It was a cheap knockoff he bought from honkong when he had to order a PSU adapter jack for the MOBO.I know I soldered it good. The seller said that PSU would work, well it does. But it doesn't have enough constant draw when doing something that needs more juice.
The cheap knockoff I was using:
IN:100-240v-1.5A(50/60hz)
Out:19V-3.16A
The rocket fish PSU universal:
IN:100-240V-2.5A(2,5A),50/60hz
Out:15-20V/5A 90W max
Figured I would post that, incase anyone runs into this problem and googles it.

I remember once 6 years ago when I was playing Resident Evil 3 directly from the CD-ROM disk in my big desktop PC.In the middle of playing the game, the CD/DVD-ROM drive started spinning the CD disk fast and then faster and faster and faster and faster and after about 10 seconds my CD/DVD-ROM drive exploded and after that opened it's tray and guess what...CD disk was in 10000 pieces LOOOOOOOOL!!!

I am pretty sure I am the only one who had this kind of an accident xD xD xD
