Best laptop brands

I'm still shopping around for a decent laptop. What are the brands I should look into?

I'm nixing hp off the bat.

I have a dell and love it, but I have the impression from some of the things you all have said that their quality has gone down. Any other yay/nays?
 
Here's a strong vote for Toshiba. :) Two solid years of daily use. Battery's still good, haven't had any trouble, haven't even had to reformat, reload, or repair Vista.

The low end Vostro's are just dressed up Inspiron's and not as durable as the Latitude/Precision line, but they're okay.

And HP ProBook are a different ballpark from the consumer crap HP puts out.

Alright. I will look into both of those then. I've just ignored all hp.

And which vostros are considered low end? And which are with looking at? And what about dell studios 15, 14 and 14z?

I'll tip my hat towards Asus. Sony also puts out some good laptops from what I've heard. I purchased an HP TouchSmart tablet in Sept 2009 and it has served me well, despite how much I now shy away from major corporation products like Dell and HP. I've heard some pretty bad stories from HP and Dell owners, but I think the big corporations are on the rebound. Manufacturers always have good years and bad years I guess. I helped a friend pick out an Asus laptop this spring and she loves it. Saved money by going to Newegg.

Welcome. I've used a few of them and they are quite nice. Amazing quality for a company that puts out garbage for regular consumers.
 
I'm agreeing with Russ on this. I am also looking at getting a very nice laptop soon and have been doing a ton of research on Sager (Clevo is the ODM) and everything I have heard about them says they are a sold and reliable system. I just don't know what exactly you are looking for though. If you want a powerful laptop (quadcore, lots of ram, dedicated GPU) and have a budget of +$1000 then Sager is my #1 pick.
But if you are looking more for a practical use rather than for gaming, I recommend ASUS. They are a very reliable company and they build their own computers. Some of their newer models are pretty sweet too.

I'd like to restate my above post. Substitute "Clevo" for where I recommend just the "Sager" build of the clevo barebones. I just found out about malibal and their Lotus and Satori series are NICE!
 
Huh, I learned something today. Until you posted that, i'd thought Asus laptops came preconfigured at newegg or tigerdirect, not quite customizable in the fashion that clevos are. Too bad there isn't a thanks button.

I would say for dedicated graphics cards for the price Asus takes it especially when you look at reputation for quality.

For non-dedicated cards when looking at quality it is between Lenovo Thinkpads or Sony Vaio.
