Scanner backlight

how do i know if my scanner has a backlight. i'm trying to scan some old film and it needs a backlight to work

If your scanner has backlight facility for example scanning slides, it will have a light in it's lid as well as its body.

its not a dumb question. Yes. On another note my scanner has a device with light and made specifically for slides and negatives that plugs into the scanner. I don't think a scanner alone will work for slides and negatives.
Then again i have a dedicated Nikon Coolscan IV for this job only.

Slides and negatives need to be scanned with the light source above (backlight), standard scanners have the light source below to scan non transparent objects, or buy a transparency add-on device.

or you could just take the light out of an old scanner, scan your negatives in a regular scanner with the top open and holding the light you just took out of an old scanner near the negatives you're scanning.

Dang, anyone know how to get the youtube tag to work?

ah yeah none of my scanners have a light on the lid just the body that would explain why its not working thanks. i guess i'll go and buy one with a backlight but i am interested in trying the idea alex said
