cell phone in-home range-boosters?

I remember when I canceled my plan with AT&T because of dropped calls all the time where and around where I live, which is where I had most of my calls/received calls, that the customer service rep I talked to tried to get me to purchase a $100 in-home range-booster.

I'm not positive if that was what it was called, but it was something like that and it was specifically for boosting the frequency for calls inside the house. I suppose it would be like an AC powered omnidirectional TV antenna or a cantenna.

What I'm wondering is just like a cantenna...has anyone ever heard of building your own device that boosts cell phone signals inside the home?

Thanks.

I thought I was making a shot in the dark. Had no idea there would be actual ways to boost cell phone reception. Thanks so much!

Ahhhh, the infinite source of information from the world wide web...

Let me know if this works out.

Word is that if you call and complain about your service hard enough they'll send you one of those in-home signal repeaters for free. Not getting reception at your home address is one of the few ways to get out of a cell phone contract without penalties, so they'll usually do whatever they can to keep you on.

As for creating a cell phone signal booster, keep in mind that the anything other than a repeater means you're going to have to have some sort of antenna hard wired to your phone. Also, you'd want to make sure that your phone has an external antenna port first, as not all do.
