DNS Settings Question

I do not have a problem but I am on a learning curve with networking and like to know how things work.
Can anyone please tell me how the DNS works when I am away from home. My ISP is in Ireland and when I go on line it uses their DNS setting. Presently I am on holiday in the UK and using hotel hotspots. Does this still mean I am using the DNS setting from my Irish ISP? And do they know when I go on line?
 
No, you don't use your isp's settings when away from home. You use the dns settings for whatever internet you are using at the time.
 
Technically it should always be set to obtain dns automatically unless there is an issue with your providers servers.
 
DNS settings

In this case you are not using your ISP DNS settings. You got IP Address from the hotel hotspot so you would be connected to DNS Server of that hotspot.

There's a magazine article where you can speed up things by change to Google DNS settings using address 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
 
the dns is the domain name server or service. it simply converts an ip address into web address like www.domain.com and a web addressess into an ip address.

i would recommend leaving dns and ip configurations to be set as automatic. nobody should change that unless they are a network admin who is restricting internet access

normal users like you and i leave it automatic
