Team Fortress 2 Free to Play

I for one am pissed off. People can get premium for $5 (minimum transaction to Wallet, minimum item cost actually just a few c). Bare in mind most that paid for it got it for $20+, that is an outrage. You can not make a game free to play without giving those that bought it proper compensation, which does not mean something that anyone can get for a fraction of the price everyone else paid.

Considering you got the game when it released in 2007, by spending that 20$ you got the ability to play it for 4 years. Including the moments of exclusive rare item grabs and competitions. Time is money.

Now if you purchased it say 2 days ago, then yeah you got screwed pretty badly. Otherwise stop complaining.

Frankly, I think its great. By now, most anyone who is anyone has played the game and either A. purchased it, or B. let it pass. This is going to pick up those last couple of people who just never really felt the cost justification/have never played. Its not going to be /swarms/ of new people by any means.

I'll leave by saying thank you Valve. The one company that still updates its old games instead of shoving some new unwanted crap in our face every year (*cough*, COD).

Oh, also for your viewing pleasure. Meet the Medic.

If I knew it would one day be free to play, I wouldn't have bought it. It is a game that I like, but not that I really, really, really enjoy, so I wouldn't mind waiting

Now I understand that it was my choice to buy it and not play it much, but I bought it on false pretences, I was under the impression you had to buy it, not that at some point in the future it would be free. And now, for offering early support, I am getting punished.

THQ did a similar thing with Company of Heroes by bringing out a free version. Those that had paid for CoH boycotted it and what do you know, it died. They agreed that it wasn't fair that people should get a game for free that everyone else had to pay for, and not get some sort of refund or extras.

If I got something extra, and I do not mean some crappy little hat, for buying it before it went free, I wouldn't care, but the fact that what I get for buying it is the same as what everyone else can get for paying a fraction of the price is just absurd. I love Valve, they are by far my favourite games developer, however I feel they have dropped the ball on this one and it is hugely unfair.

You go over to the Steam forums, I am not the only one who thinks this, and server owners have actually started to punish those playing for free by kicking/banning them from the server. That I think is a little far, but understandable. If I were a server owner, I would want that server to be the extra for those that paid, I would want it to be there for people that bought the game, and make it a better place to be, because you can bet your bottom dollar there will be a huge influx of unskilled players and whiny kids now, and that is a terrible thing for any community

Hm, well, I for one am happy that it's free now cause now I can play :). But I see what you're getting at. Didn't they do this with portal also? First charge and later make it free that is.

Nope, Portal is still pay to play. For a period it was free when Steam for Mac came out, but that was a limited period, now it is back to pay to play.

Can someone explain to me why The Orange Box hasn't gone down in price? You are getting what is now a free game in there, but it is the same price...

Lol, its 20 bucks, geez

Its a commercial decision, they are obviously attracting players for future releases

I totally agree, I think its a good move that they made it free....I’ve seen all the moaning on Steam forums over it it going free and its just getting pathetic now, Why cant people just accept the game is getting on a bit now...and the Developers have made the decision to make it free to all!...If those guys really loved TF2 then they would respect the developers decision and be quiet.

That’s typical of most game admins for you...Very childish.

I also have in my possession a lot of vintage tagged items. Including my prized ultra rare Level 100 Vintage Jarate.

TAKE THAT FREEBIES.

That barely makes sense.... :o

Yes, they are going to release TF3 soon i would expect, and what better than having a massive surge in your player base? Smart if you aske me. those that winge over 20 bucks need a life (or a job).

I am complaining over the fact that they are making pay to play game free and offering nothing back, not even to those that bought it just a day or two before it went free. All games do go free eventually, but not with in 4 years of release, that is just unheard of.

I have a life, I have a job, I have a paid for copy of TF2, so am entitled to complain when something I bought is now given 0 value. I have spoke to so many people about this, and only people that either A. Rarely play it, or B. Have never played it, see it as a positive thing

I'm going to agree with this. I own it, used to play it a lot, but haven't for a long time. There "compensation" is that we get "premium" accounts. Woo, i can wear a hat now...

I'm not going to complain about it too much though. I paid for it, now it's free. It sucks spending hard earned money on a game that's now free. But that's life and I'll get over it. :good:

I just had to... lol

MOOOOOOAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN... and now nothing has changed. get over it.

Sort of expected this level of maturity from you now

I cant believe a User has made a Plugin to kick F2P players....how pathetic,Why cant people just grow up.
Im betting soon Valve wont allow this Plugin to be run.

I don't see it as a bad thing. It makes what should be a proper premium account into one by adding "exclusive" servers. I see it as members servers, the same as you get members areas in all sorts of other places where you can either get into the normal place for free, or the extra area by paying extra. People like myself and thousands of others paid extra and got nothing. It is the community giving back to the community.

Oh and another point, people seem to overlook the fact that anyone can make a free Steam account, anyone can install and play TF2 for free, and they can do this as many times as they wish (even though I am sure it is against the EULA), which makes for an infinite source of cheaters and griefers. You make it so only premium can join, nobody that has paid is going to join a server with the intention of pissing people off because they paid money for it. I would expect it from kids maybe whose parents bought it, but they are easy to get rid of and won't get in again with a free account. There are more pros than cons to this addon. You don't like it, buy the game ;)

I do understand what you’re saying, but surely if a hacker comes into the game then the game admin can just kick him right?

What happened to Hardware bans on Steam? Do they still do that?

I actually have the paid version, but I still don’t agree that free players should be kicked just because they got it free...Its not like the F2P players have illegally downloaded it. They were given it free from Valve.

You think VAC, or PB, or any other anti-cheat engine is perfect? The cheaters are always 1 step ahead, but now even if they manage to stand still and VAC catches a load of them, it doesn't matter, they can just go straight back in.

And then, as a clan and server admin myself, I know that it isn't possible to have at least 1 admin online 24/7 unless you are a clan with hundreds of members across the world, it just isn't practical. Hackers and griefers kill servers. If you can reduce the chance of having them by even 1%, I would take it for the sake of everyone else that wants to use that server and for the sake of the clan being active

Really? Do people really feel that strongly bout 20 dollars worth of a game?

I think it is more the principle and the anti-griefers
