If I knew it would one day be free to play, I wouldn't have bought it. It is a game that I like, but not that I really, really, really enjoy, so I wouldn't mind waiting
Now I understand that it was my choice to buy it and not play it much, but I bought it on false pretences, I was under the impression you had to buy it, not that at some point in the future it would be free. And now, for offering early support, I am getting punished.
THQ did a similar thing with Company of Heroes by bringing out a free version. Those that had paid for CoH boycotted it and what do you know, it died. They agreed that it wasn't fair that people should get a game for free that everyone else had to pay for, and not get some sort of refund or extras.
If I got something extra, and I do not mean some crappy little hat, for buying it before it went free, I wouldn't care, but the fact that what I get for buying it is the same as what everyone else can get for paying a fraction of the price is just absurd. I love Valve, they are by far my favourite games developer, however I feel they have dropped the ball on this one and it is hugely unfair.
You go over to the Steam forums, I am not the only one who thinks this, and server owners have actually started to punish those playing for free by kicking/banning them from the server. That I think is a little far, but understandable. If I were a server owner, I would want that server to be the extra for those that paid, I would want it to be there for people that bought the game, and make it a better place to be, because you can bet your bottom dollar there will be a huge influx of unskilled players and whiny kids now, and that is a terrible thing for any community
