My acer Aspire One ZG5 will turn on, like I hit the power button and you can hear everything come on, but there is not display at all. I recently reformatted it from windows 7 to windows 7 because it was having problems, and when i turned it on, it did this problem. Did not even goto Acer BIOS screen upon startup. I am a very experienced PC tech for any kind of laptop/desktop and I still have no clue what this is. I figured there was a bad sector or something in the hard drive, so i dissasembled the laptop, plugged it into my desktop via SATA connector, and it did not show up. So I ordered a brand new hard drive for it, made sure it was a correct replacement of course, and decided to buy more RAM while I was at it. Only 1GB because that is the max it can hold. So when I got the parts in, i installed them correctly. Well, still same problem, can't even get up the BIOS screen to boot anything from so I can put an OS on it. I have dissasembled time and time again replacing memory with old, taking all the parts off of it including CPU fan, CMOS battery, everything. And left them out for a while and put them all back together... still same thing. PLEASE HELP IF ANYONE KNOWS WHAT THIS COULD BE!!

try plugging in a an external display, do you see anything then?

What do you mean you hear everything come on? Windows startup sound? or just the fans spinning?

If the processor is cooked, or the heat shroud is connected corectly it wont post. BTW a bad hard drive will not prevent it from posting.

Yes, i forgot to mention that I plugged it into an external display and it still gave me the same results. And I mean by hearing the fans run and The lights are all displaying, power, battery, etc. And still no post or anything, no windows logo and sound.

Sounds like your Processor is toast, but it could be the video card. Reguardless, IMO its time to buy a new laptop.

It could be that your BIOS is corrupt and needs to be reloaded, I've actually encountered two similar Acer netbooks that I've had to do this to.

Download the BIOS file from here.

Unzip it, there are only two files we need. The "Dos_Flash" folder has the two files we need. Rename "3310.fd" to "ZG5IA32.FD". Then take that file and the "FLASHIT.EXE" file and move them both to an otherwise empty flash drive.

With the netbook off, plug in the flash drive and unplug any other USB devices. Hold the Esc and Fn keys first and then hit the power button while still holding the other two keys. When the power light comes on wait a couple of seconds and then release the keys. Power light should start blinking which lets you know it's reflashing the BIOS, and after no more than 10 minutes your laptop should restart like normal. If this doesn't happen try it again, I've had to do it three times before it took before.

Ok, i'll definitely try this in a few minutes and i'll let you know what happens. Thanks!

YES! it worked and it only took it one time. Thank you so much. I would have never of thought of flashing the BIOS. I came to the conclusion that it was something with the motherboard and was about to buy a whole new motherboard, so thanks for saving me some money!

New problem

I did what you said to do, and it worked perfectly. I setup a new copy of windows 7 onto it and tried to activate it and none of the codes that i know work, will not work. It gave me an error code of 0xC004F063 which has something to do with the activation on the BIOS. Please tell me how to fix this!

None of the codes you know???? Where is the activation key for the cd that you used? Are you saying you are trying to pirate windows 7? There are different keys for different versions of the OS like upgrade, OEM, full retail, 32bit, 64 bit, Home, ultimate, pro..etc..

No, not at all. I meant I have used multiple copies of FULL RETAIL versions of Windows 7. I have several because I am a PC tech and am constantly buying RETAIL copies of Windows 7. I have reformatted many times with different disks and different keys.

I will remmeber this, for future repairs...

I think that when i flashed the BIOS that it erased the activation files that originally came on it... So now i either have ot find the correct files to reflash the BIOS that have the activation files on it or have to replace the motherboard... oh well, thanks for all the help guys. really appreciate it! :D

The BIOS would not have anything to do with a retail copy of Windows 7, the only thing that might check the BIOS would be a branded OEM version of Windows 7.

Well that's all I could come up with, because i've used retail copies and branded OEM copies and just OEM. Sooo.. I'm convinced it's something in the BIOS. Well, before it messed up, I used that laptop for testing mostly and trying out my own OS's ad they went on there fine, and then i'd jst grab a windows 7 disk and a code and pop it back on there and it would go with no problem at all. But, idk, i'll figure out something.

If you have trouble activating Windows 7 open the Windows Activation Wizard while in Windows 7 to use the phone and activate Windows:
While installing Windows 7 at the enter your product key page, do not enter your key and uncheck "Automatically Activate When Online"
1. When you have reached the desktop, Click Start, then in the Search box type: slui.exe 4
2. Press Enter on your Keyboard
3. Select your Country.
4. Select the Phone Activation option, then call and hold for a real person.

From Microsoft answers.

Also I might try reflashing, this time unzip all of the files directly to the flash drive. Rename both of the .fd files. I never had to activate Windows after doing one of these reflashes, it could be that one of the other BIOS files corresponds to that.

But still... no way retail Windows 7 should need to check the BIOS for anything.

I'm flashing it right now with the files you provided me with. I'll let you know what happens. But, I don;t know? That's just the strangest thing. All the versions of Windows 7 I have tried putting on here are retail versions. Well, after the first reformat which was an OEM version.
