Hello. I was running ubuntu and i was trying to convert a partition to ntfs. I couldnt so i booted a windows live cd. I didnt find success too, but i tried to convert a linux swap partition to linux swap, as in the hdd manager it was registered as unreserved space.

So after that, my computer didnt boot. It froze during startup, and i couldnt even enter boot menu, or bios menu

So i tried to remove the master hdd, run an ubuntu live cd, and while it was booting, plug in the hdd again

Well, as the computer was booting from the cd,. i tried to connect the hdd. I inserted the datd cable. I tried then to insert the power cable, but i put it the other way and i noticed a spark. Then i connected it the normal way.

After that, the hdd wasnt recognized at all, not by the Bios, either by the ubuntu live cd (from which i am sending this)

So basically i am awaiting the bad news from you guys... My hdd is burned and ruined, right??

You might have ruined it, yes. You should NEVER plug or unplug a [non-USB] device from a running computer.

As an aside Niko you're lucky you didn't fry the motherboard and yourself.

Voyager is totally correct in what he said.

Yes. I did the same thing, plug in a power cable BACKWARDS [So that the +12V goes where the +5V goes, and vise versa]. And then no signs of life. :(
However... It might be possible just the main circuit board of the HDD is fried, and could be replaced. Though that really depends, and if there wasn't any important data, I might not even bother trying to find a new main board for that specific hard drive model.

If it is just the circuit board, you'll need the exact same model hard drive to swap them out.

To be honest I can't quite understand how mvmacd actually managed to plug either a molex or a sata power connector in backwards.

guys thanks for all the replys.
i have a bloody cusre with computers. basically i can never settle down, peacefully. my windows needed to be restarted about 20 times (no joke) to boot, and if they booted it took 20 minutes to completely load. after many time i managed to have it all together. then the next day...BOOM

now i have to boot ubuntu from usb, as i want to burn files from my other hdd (i have only 1 dvd drive), so as to install ubuntu/windows on that.... oh well...

Lol. Actually it was a cheapy "IDE/SATA to USB" kits on ebay, so I think the molex connector was cheap. Also, I thought it was just stiff cause it was new maybe? So I probably forced it in, and didn't realize till it was too late.
