Screen resolution...confused :S

Hi all, i constantly see people saying that such and such a game looks great in 1650x1200 (random numbers :P)

How do i get resolutions like this?

Or is my GPU limited to 1280x1024?

I ask this as i never have the option for a higher resolution.

It looks like your card has a max resolution of 2560x1600. Since you are limited to 1280x1024 I would bet that your monitor has a max of 1280x1024. That is why you ca't go any higher.

Ahh, whats the cheapest monitor out there to get the most out of my gpu, and another question my native res is 1280x768, my pc generally play games brilliantly at that, even crysis 2, however when i bump it up to 1280x1024 i start to see quite noticable lag, is this GPU or monitor related? As it even happens with old, old game that my system should play maxed :S

Yeah it's your GPU that can't cope with the increase of resolution the higher resolution you go the more the video card has to process with its memory therefore creating lagg. Infact if you have a problem with a game not running smooth one of the first things you do is lower your resolution and see how that goes.

Could it be possible its my monitor? I mean it runs things at 1280x768 with high on everything but then wont run it in 1280x1024, this is even age old games such as call fo duty 4 and the old dawn of wars :S

Surely my GPU should handle these games on highest?

It is not you monitor. Lag can not be caused my your monitor. Looking up other models of the 8800GTS I see some that have 320mb of RAM and others with 512mb. What do you have?

At higher resolutions you need more memory. I doubt that 320mb is enough for games at a higher resolution.

What do you mean when you way that it won't run? Lag or other problems?

Someone doesn't remember ghosting and lag on old 15ms and 12ms response time monitors :D.

Anyway. I had a 9800, a step above an 8800 and couldn't run COD4 on 1680x1050 very well. I hate to say it OP, but your GPU is just not up to snuff.

OP could get a 22inch monitor and a 5770 for about 200$-250$ depending on quality. That would probably run MW2 and Crysis 2 etc fine at 1080.

Thanks for the replies, its the 320mb gpu

I think ill save up for a new monitor and go with the 5770 until i get some serious money for a proper reboot :P.

im happy as is just couldnt undertsand why i couldnt get a higher res :P

hey guys, now im really boggled :/, yesterday i hooked my pc up to my hd tv, 22 inch, res 1650x1050

it ran Operation flahspoint red river,(and this was with most of the options on high setting) with minimal lag and i literally mean minimal as in, maybe a bit when things get really heated (it was similar to playing it on my monitor at 1280x1024) and also burnout paradise at 1650x1050 on full.

You guys sure it couldnt be my monitor? or do these games just not require that much of a powerful GPU

I'm still guessing that it is the games but let's run some tests to see if we can find a pattern.

Are you running an FPS monitor on your system while playing games? If not Please use one (FRAPS or there is a good one that comes with MSI Afterburner) Play your games using different settings and resolutions. Try t see if there is a connection between settings and FPS as well as points in the game and FPS (like battle scenes vs. sniper missions if that makes any sense)

I would guess that you can notice the lag anything under 30 FPS. Under 20 FPS I would think might make game play more difficult just because the game my not be fluid anymore.

Even though you probably already know this I may as well say it anyway. The titles are going to play differently. So you might be able to play MW1 at 1680x1050 while BFBC2 will be hard to run at 1280x1024. It is probably just the different games needing a bit more graphical horsepower that is causing lag on lower resolutions while others can handle the higher resolution.

Let me know how it goes!
