Not getting email when chaining gmail to ATT?

Hi,

So this is not my problem but sort of a client of mine's problem. I have a background in programming and this is a little out of that but I am trying to see if I can help him anyway.

So he has his email setup so people can email him at [email protected] which is an email address and site hosted by ATT. He uses his gmail address for all of his emails though. So gmail is supposed to get/send email to/from his business email address. With me so far?

Well occasionally that doesn't work. 5% of the time he might only get 10% of his emails. The rest bounce back to the senders and give an error message like this:

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

[email protected]
Error Type: SMTP
Error Description: No mail servers appear to exists for the recipients
address.
Additional information: Please check that you have not misspelled the
recipients email address.

hMailServer

Now, I just noticed it said SPAM in the Subject line. Could that be part of it? We will soon be switching his host to someone else so could that resolve this?

He has multiple clients in multiple geographic locations getting this error at seemingly random times for random amounts of time.

It's most likely becuase some email providers have whitelisted/blacklisted some email hostnames as spam and the only way to fix this is to contact the company to have it removed. Just have him change his email address to gmail and then he should be getting all of his emails with no issue.

But then why would it work sometimes and not others? He wants people to be able to email him at his business email address.

It all depends on the senders Internet/email provider. If they have your friends email domain on the spam list then he won't receive email from them or be able to send email to them.

This seems unlikely because sometimes the emails go through and sometimes they don't. Also, I don't think this person has the ability to engage in any kind of spamming that would get his domain name put on a list.

Some IT departments blacklist Gmail. For instance, my local school district blacklists all gmail coming in unless the intended recipient has already sent an email to that specific gmail address.

So I have to get my kids' teachers to email me first, then I can email them at will.
