just wondering why there would be a need for two of the same graphix cards , is it just for backup incase 1 blows out or something ?

Some cards are designed to work in tandem, so just like you can have a dual-core processor, you can run dual-core graphics.

This is useful to hard-core gamers who are looking for the fastest speeds for online gaming.

Now im curious about your comment Dngrsone.
Are you talking about dual monitors? And im guessing his is only hooked up to one. and one card blank. Im asking because i don't play games but curious.
I have dual 24" Samsung Syncmasters.

There are some people that run multiple monitors at a high resolution. When the resolution is extended across multiple screen, that creates more processing power for the Vid card. So, in order to, keep the FPS at a reasonable rate on such a high resolution, multiple cards are used.

Some people just like having two Vid cards in their system, because they think it will produce more horsepower for their gaming. Problem is, most people use single monitors, and chances are, they are barley using the second vid card.

As BassAddict was saying, some people use multiple monitors, though I haven't heard of gamers doing so.

When using dual graphics boards for gaming, the goal is to split the processing load for the graphics between the two boards. Example, SLI

Personally, I've always considered it a half-measure until the video card people start building dual- or multi-core GPUs, but I guess it;s more difficult to do that with an add-in card...

Anyway, in online gaming for the ultra-competitive (talking mostly first-person shooters), any amount of lag or stutter can mean death, so having a wide pipe to the internet, massive graphics capability, and fast hard drives are important.
