Got a New (used) Comp, having display problems!

Okay so in my previous thread (Am I getting a good deal?) i mentioned that my neighbors were selling me a used comp with a:
1000w psu
2 8800GTX's in SLI
Core to Quad 2.66 ghz
I gave it a harddrive
and it has some nForce motherboard

The problem is, alot of the times when I do a fresh start up, Ill get a message saying some normal stuff like GPU ram amount etc (this is normal) and the display looks fine. Then it goes to the XFX screen (the cards are XFX) and there are wierd "lines?" and graphical corruption like that, but I stil can see the picture pretty well. Then it will go to the BIOS screen were it veryfies VMI Pool Data and starts the OS. That aswell looks perfectly fine. Then Win7 startup animation come up looking fine and then BAM. The os is booted and im left with a 640-480 pixel display HORRABLE color and corruption, and windows claims that Geforce 8800GTX (1) Has repoted faulty or somthing with error 43. The other card is fine but if I plug my display into it i get no picture. The strangest thing of all is that if i try to start Nv Control panel it claims that i do not have a nvidia card installed.

If i turn off the computer and turn off the PSU and let the mobo clear its currents, and I turn it on again, it works fine (but normally for that one startup)

Another thing is that when it WAS working fine, I ran the windows rating assessment and when it changed the theme, there was some gui corruption and my screen froze making me restart and seeing the line problem.

What on earth is going on?
THanks for any help guys!

first thing would be to update/install your drivers for the cards, and it might help to remove the faulty card for now and use the good one for now, see if that lets the video work and all.

Im on the machine right now and its working fine but I checked GPU-Z and the temperatures are REALLY high!

GPU1 - 83 degrees
GPU2 - 72 degrees
(WITH THE CASE OPEN)
HOLY NOODLES
My GTS 250 would rarely get to those temps on full load!

Is this normal or should I take the cards out and give them some cleaning?

And and my mobo apparently is a nForce 680i SLI if that matters...

Having the case open generally increases the temp, not decreases it. You want good airflow from the front or side of the case and out the back.

Sounds like a dead card. I would maybe talk him down on the price and use that money to either buy a new 8800 or get a single powerful card.

Have you got the PCIe power connectors on both card? You didnt answer jonnyp11, if you have the latest drivers installed. Plus did you undate the motherboard chipset drivers.

Have you tried each card on its own? As in taking the other card out and using the same slot. Do you have the SLI bridge in place?

Whats the motherboard make and model?

If those temps are at idle, thats pretty high.

My mobo is a nForce 680i SLI. But actually since the thread was made things have been going really well, Im playing games amazingly. Im gettings some compressed air to clean out the cards and fix the heat issue. If I do end up getting more probs ill post em here. Thanks

good luck, but if you haven't you still need to update the drivers and always check at least monthly for any updates.
