game engine?

I know this probably should be in another subforum. Admin/mod team, feel free to move it.

I am looking for a game engine that is interactive, preferably free, or at least with a trail period.
Basically, I want a to make the perfect, unwinable, game for me in a FPS setup. I want it to be mine, so I can set it up how I like, and be free to mod it in any way (heck, if i want to id put an ak47 in a civil war game, just to see the outcome).

So, does anyone know of a builder, or Engine or something where I could build a full game, mission by mission, with minimal programming knowledge?

Depending on if you have/like the Valve Source engine, you can get the Source SDK and Hammer World Editor free with Steam. Both are really easy to use to make games and mods with no programming experience at all.

If you want to delve a little deeper and program some, a mate of mine is working with the Irrlicht engine. And I hear its pretty nice.

the Valve source looks interesting, but it requires some sort of application.

It seems to be a business, as in retail, software. Im not sure that my agriculture business license would cover that (same with Tax license, as different rates).

For Source Engine/Hammer you need to have a few source engine games installed (at least one like counterstrike or hl2) and the hammer world editor installed.

so to use them id have to buy CS or HL2? I dont really think thats worth it.

how bout this, any one know where someone could go to get a programmer to build a game shell, and just insert our own equip, vehicles, and enemies? Thats basically what I want.

so you can't afford 10 bucks for hl2, which by itself is a great game, and allows you to use the easiest editor.

I got 10. I just dont want to use HL2. Point is, how original of a game can I make, if im stuck to modding HL2? not that much.

well it basically uses the hl2 engine, then you can make mods for it to create a game, just might need programming skill for the mods part.

oh, remembered on ubuntu software center there's a sandbox game creator, i downloaded it but haven't tried it yet.

it seems more like a map creator, not sure of the point, but kinda fun to just mess with, except the tut dissapeard when i wondered off after putting it in 3d, it's weird.

What exactly are you wanting? Are you wanting to making a complete game from the "ground" up (in this case, the ground starts at the engine). Or are you wanting to mod a game to hell (including uses it's engine and mod kit as needed) to the point it's something you can call your own?

Too different paths. I just started learning game development this past week, so i'll be of a little help :P

Well, considering that Left 4 Dead, Portal, Counter Strike, and quite a few other games all use the same engine as HL2 I would say there is a little room for diversity...

I want to make it from the ground up. Be able to mod it to my liking. Like have a base line, and plug in soldiers and equipment from any era. THis way, I can play against, lets say Nazis now, and if it hits me, plug in some Romans, or Celts, and play the same game, but ~2000 years back, or flash forward it to the future.

not what i was saying. If its just moded, then its still going to look like HL2. I want something distinctly different from everything.

I'm afraid you're not going to find support. The task you're looking at is too large. No one wants to make an entire game from the ground up for /free/. You can either learn the tools of the trade yourself, or pay someone to make it for you. Sorry :(.

Good luck in the adventure. You might scale the project down to where its manageable and producible by you. Even if that means using another game engine like Source or Unreal. Which don't get me wrong, are amazing engines and have serious potential :).
