Is it possible to have too much RAM?

Instead of building a PC I decided to go with a local shop that does custom PC's. My new PC will have 16GB of RAM, is this considered too much for day to day tasks?

8GB is plenty for gaming and heavy multitasking, you would only need more for something like CAD or video editing on a large scale. Plus RAM is cheap (and always getting cheaper) and easy to install so you can always upgrade later if needed.

It was only $80 to go from 8 to 16GB, so its definitely cheap.

For day to day task, 4GB is enough. But RAM get cheap these days, probably stick 2 x 4GB would last you for a while

I dont think 16GB is worth it,Even 8GB is overkill..i know. :P

Whats therest specs of your intended system?

I think you would be much better off putting that $80 towards an SSD,or if you already have an SSD in mind on your build list put the $80 towards a bigger SSD. :P

I say go for the 16gb if its only $80 more that way if you ever do get into video editing or something that would actually require that much your way ahead..

Having too much RAM won't hurt anything but your pocketbook. For the most part, 1/2 to 3/4's of that 16G will be rarely utilized.

What are the specs on the RAM? If you are getting another 8gb for $80 it probably isn't the best RAM. Look into getting 8gb of something like 1600MHz CAS 7. That will give you better performance than more slower RAM.

I second this, you would benefit far more from an SSD than putting 8GB more RAM in your system that will, in all likelihood, go completely unused.

right now after a 35 buvk mail in rebate you can get 16gb's hyperX 1600mhz for 80 instead of an extra 80 for 8

and 4 is plenty for nearly anyone, 8 is overkill for most, even for a good number of gamers, 12 is plenty for real workstations, and 16+ is only needed for people ultra-tasking with video creation or coding

4 is way too little imo i have 4 in my current computer and its slowest piece of crap ever but then again its like 535 mhz or something retarded

I play pretty much all popular games out there, and i've never needed more than 4GB.

I've even ran Metro 2033 and The Witcher 2 to test, and they still run smooth as anything. Helps having good Ram though, not just any Ram. 18GB is a bit ott!

yeah, in gaming or almost everything else really, 4gb's ddr3 1600mhz+ will almost kill 8gb's ddr3 1066mhz, and you can't even compare 1333 or 1066 to like 2133mhz. the ram speed is more important than the amount as long as you have 4+gb's (not 6, you want 2 identical sticks for dual channel mode which is faster than normal, but 6 only comes in 3's which isn't supported and not a big diff.), but also once you get to 1866 it gets overpriced for the average person, jumps a good chunk for the cheapest 1866.
