i have tried this computer on two routers now

Does that mean the computer you are using or another one?

Also, you've done a lot of router testing, but what about the modem? First thing I would do is just completely reset your connection:

Turn off all PCs
Unplug the modem and the router
Wait a few seconds
plug in the modem
let it boot
plug in the router
let it boot
then turn on your PC

See if it doesn't connect then. If it doesn't then it's probably an issue with your network adapter. Try checking the device manager (right click my computer and on the side you will see the link) see if there is a yellow symbol next to your network adapter

Have you had internet on that computer before? You might want to check if the computer installed the drivers for your Network Adapter or ethernet or whatever its called lol.

Like posted above, I would first check your drivers in device manager. Below is a solution I found on another forum:

"The problem turned out to be with the workgroup setting in the system settings. When I installed vista I chose a workgroup. So, when I tried to connect to the internet it was looking for that workgroup (resulting in 'local only' status). So to resolve the problem I went to my system settings and removed the workgroup and chose that this computer was for home use and not office network. When I rebooted the system I immediately noticed the internet icon in the windows toolbar."

I also found this article that explains how to fix the problem you're having.

hey guys the comp has been connected to the net before it just stopped working and saying local connection only my wireless driver are installed properly acording to vista. this is my sisters comp it worked on her net then stopped so a brought it over here to try and it doing the same on mine but i also have a xbox that was connected to xbox live another the desktop and this laptop on the same connection so i feel the problem must be this other comp settings somehow i will try wot u suggested above and let you know how i get on cheers

Uninstall all networking controllers and reinstall. This is a very common problem with Vista. There are fixes for it but sometimes you just can't get it to work without reinstalling the operating system. You may also want to try doing a system restore back to a day when it was working.

Got the same problem with my Vista. Some how, it got fixed when I setup dummy ips and rebooted, then removed the ips so that Vista got ips by DHCP from the router. Hope it helps
