Building a PC for my friend

hello everyone, just recently my friend was looking for a new Computer to

upgrade from his old one. I suggested that he should build his own, and what

we're going to do is build it together so we both get some hands on experience.

His budget is 500-600$ including shipping and tax.

can you help me out with some of the parts, I'm having a little difficulty picking them out.

His main purpose is gaming and he uses youtube and google.

He would like to play his games at high settings as well.

can you help find some parts that would give him the best bang for his buck?

Well for that budget, there is no way he could play too many games on high settings. However, I can give some recommendations. First I need to know some things. Does he need a monitor? keyboard? mouse? case? Because depending on those can make a big difference on his budget.
 
Alright well then here are some things I recommend.

Case

CPU

Mobo

GPU

RAM

PSU

Hard Drive

Optical Drive

That comes to a total of $715.44 with shipping from newegg. Some of those come with mail-in-rebates however, and that could take it down to $665.44. I know it's a little over, but I wanted to get him some good parts. You could drop the graphics card a little, but it would take down the quality of the games. You could also drop the CPU and Mobo, but any lower on a Mobo and you are getting into micro-ATX, which aren't bad, but kind of limit upgradability.

Gigabyte is also a reputable brand, but they are pretty close. So if you want to save some money then go for the Sapphire.

Oh by the way, I wasn't necessarily saying Gigabyte wasn't a reputable brand, I was just reassuring him that even though it's cheaper for the exact same thing, they're both high quality products, no worries.

No, but we're not really wanting to have to spend 100$ on windows 7....are there any ways to get windows 7 without spending that much on it?

also, what are the differences from the xfx 6870 and the xfx 6870 black edition single fan?

black is pre overclocked, but you could get the same thing out of the other and save the 10 bucks by just using a program they give you on the driver disk.

and there's no way to get a free os other than is you get aa disto of linux, but you'd want to practice on a current computer first otherwise there may be issus trying to get it, and it isn't going to game the easiest with it, you will have to get wine and find out which games it can support to do that.

exactly what I was thinking, the only reason I can see people paying the extra money for is the looks, but you're not really going to see it even in a case with with a window because you'll be looking at the top of it.

also with the HAF 912, should I buy a fan for every slot in the case? I'm going to overclock my cpu and on top of that the GPU as well.

I just ordered Windows 7 Home 64 bit yesterday for 80 dollars from Newegg. Keep an eye on Newegg's email specials.
 
that's true, forgot about that, and for the cooling, to overclock the cpu i'd get a cpu fan, and the gpu should be fine, the haf's are supposed to have good airflow, so should be fine, and the stock fans are normally fine, i'd just keep an eye on the temps so if they are getting too high then you'll know you might need some more fans, otherwise leave that part stock.

also before this thread dies, I heard that the new games like MW3 and BF3 are going to require 6gbs of ram, I douubt this is true but I just wanted to see what you guys thought.

considering games use the vram more then the ram, i don't think so, but they do still use the ram so it isn't impossible.
 
if they do, then you can always just increase the pagefile. but no, they can't require 6 gigs of RAM, because chances are the computers people are using only have 4 gigs. That's all I have, and it's enough for everything else
