I built a computer during the holidays thinking I would do lots of ressource intensive work.

Turns out for all my school work I use my laptop and only use my desktop for downloading and watching shows on a bigger screen.

I know realize that I can do everything I use my computer for with a NAS. So my question is watch should I do of this computer which runs 24/7 and in a longterm views uses more power.

If you plan on keeping it on all the time, there are distributed computing projects you could participate in such as Folding at Home, seti@home and BOINC.

Alternatively, you could set it up as a dedicated server, media machine, or a firewall (only really useful if there are multiple computers in the household).

Or, sell it, use the money for accessories for your laptop.

You can use it for webhosting if you have a suitable internet connection.
Or you can use it as a remote hard drive. I mean put all your files on the network and share it on wifi or the internet by setting up an FTP so you have access to all your files where ever you go :D

For the time being my desktop does serve as a media machine. All my media is shared to my xbox in the living room whenever my internet connection wants to work in that way.

How would I setup an FTP server?

my only advice would be to find out when the cheap-rate electricity occurs, as if you initiated work from then onwards, you'd at least save money for the household bill.

an if you were www linked i'd find out when network traffic is least for your region, so you dont waste time online for negliable progress.
