Windows Update Problems -- error code 80072EFD

Hello everyone,

I'm trying to update a laptop which has Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. It wouldn't get updates here recently, so last night I manually installed the SP1 and SP2 packages; I had to disable AVG to install SP1, although I didn't have to for installation of SP2.

Anyway, when I open Windows Update (from Control Panel) and tell it to check for updates, it fails, and I get the error code above. The only antivirus on it is AVG Free 2011, there are no 3rd-party firewalls, and Internet Explorer can connect to the web just fine. Disabling AVG didn't help the Windows Update.

Anyway, I would really appreciate any ideas you guys could give me about what I can do for this. Thanks in advance.

Hi again, I just got off the phone after nearly 2 hours talking with Microsoft's guys, and the last gentleman I talked to thought that the laptop was infected with something that was keeping it from installing Microsoft updates.

I might add that something consistently prevented the computer from going on Microsoft websites, where he was trying to help me through.

When I talked to Microsoft earlier in the day, one of their guys had recommended that I uninstall the antivirus program (AVG 2011) in an attempt to try to check updates; and I had done this.

So now, when I tried to reinstall AVG, it could not connect as it needed to, to install. So, I promptly slapped on Avast! because it has seemed to work on my personal machine, and because I know it's an offline installation.

The gentleman had me download Microsoft Safety Scanner, but even that I had to do on my personal machine, as it was blocked on this laptop I'm trying to fix. So, that is scanning right now.

I'm sort of worried. I know the user of the laptop in question extremely well and know for a fact that he doesn't go on dangerous websites, and I believe he tries to be careful about other Internet-related things too. He kept AVG 2011 on there, too, so it's not like he was surfing with absolutely no protection.

I also downloaded Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, and Hijackthis, just in case you think I need to run them on here.

Anyway, that's where things are at, so if you have any more questions for me or suggestions to help me, I'd love to hear them. I'll post again when the Microsoft Safety Scan is done.

Davis

I doubt this is a malware issue but you can post your malwarebytes and hijackthis logs if you wish.

BTW, when it finds infected files, in what order to you make the following selections?

Repair.

Move to Chest (aka Quarantine).

Delete.

Just curious. Thanks

Davis

Okay, here's the details from the Microsoft Safety Scan:

Virus: Win32/Alureon.H

Trojan:Win32/Alureon.EC

Exploit:Java/CVE-2010-0094.EH

The Exploit one was removed, the first two were partially removed and require manual steps and a restart.

I'll do this and then hit the sack. I'll have more info tomorrow.

Please run malwarebytes and hijackthis and post the logs.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

THen click on fix checked.

I'm not a fan of toolbars so I would suggest to uninstall the productivity 2 toolbar unless you really need it. Toolbars tend to cause issues with the broswer.

I also noticed some remnants of nortons being installed on the system, was this true? If so, then you should run their removal tool.

http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20071130124653EN&ln=en_US

Start at step 2 on that page and click on the yellow download box, then run the removal tool.

The system seems to be running just fine now.

I ran HijackThis again and checked off those items you listed, except that the following 2 you listed were no longer there:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {CCC7A320-B3CA-4199-B1A6-9F516DD69829} - (no file)
O17 - HKLM\System\CS3\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: NameServer = 93.188.165.175,93.188.160.235

Is it really important to remove the Productivity 2 toolbar? I don't think it gets much use, but I could just leave it disabled, couldn't I?

I don't believe Norton has ever been on this computer. Should I just go ahead and run their removal tool anyway?

Okay, I'll go ahead and remove the productivity toolbar; I'm not perfectly certain why it was on there. And I'll run the Norton removal tool.

AVG is the antivirus software that is installed on the computer, so I don't quite understand why I should remove it. (I reinstalled it this morningwhen things seemed to be working again.)

According to your log, AVAST is installed. Can't have more than one antivirus program installed at any given time.

Sorry for the confusion. I only installed AVAST as a temporary measure; I uninstalled AVAST and reinstalled AVG this morning, after the intial HijackThis log was made.

BTW, is it still necessary to keep Malwarebytes on the system, or can I take that off now?

Here's a copy of the log I just made after taking off the productivity 2 toolbar. Maybe this will help explain things to you.

Keep malwarebytes on your system and use it scan for malware like every 3 days. It must be manually updated though every time you run it.

Okay, I'll do that.

I guess it looks like everything should be good to go now.

I guess this little issue is solved. Thanks a bunch for the help, John.
