High dpc latency, slow computer

I'm at my wits end with this computer. Older HP, windows xp, was running fine a week ago he said. DPC latency checker tops out at over 200000 micro-somethings. I've tried disabling every single piece of hardware in device manager to no avail. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the video drivers, with high latency occuring with no driver installed. I have reseated pretty much every connection. The next thing on my list is system restore. It's slow right from boot, the windows xp boot screen lasts forever, with little hdd activity.

Any ideas??

can you post the full specs, may wanna do some malwarebytes, disk error checks, defregs, registry checks, and that stuff if you haven't.

amd athlon 64 3500
1gb ram
radeon xpress 200

I'll do the registry and disk checks after the system restore finishes. Also what led to the latency check was the cpu usage does not reflect at all what the system idle process should be ie. 100% cpu usage and 70% system idle usage

dang, this is almost making me like my old compaq in my sig, and love my emachine in my sig too, but i'd say to do the registry check first, seems like the main thing it could be to me, also you could try putting ubuntu on there and se how it goes.

I would, but this isn't my computer. He is determined on windows xp for his battlefield games and other software.

Still system restoring...

well those are pretty good games, i have 2 complete pack and 2142, supposed to be with packs but lost keys to both and got a support guy to put them on my account and he messed up wich was w/ packs.

well system restore fixed the latency issue. There are still some bizarre times where it just stops doing something, like opening my computer and it just shows the flashlight for like 20 minutes with no hdd activity before finally popping up. Now internet explorer is doing it...

Will try malware bytes when it finally does something again

yeah, gotta agree with linkin if it's that bad, wether it's a virus or complete fragmentation, it sonds like it will take days to figure that crap out when you could get windows and ~1 hour of work downloading/installing it and all essential stuff, and since you said he wants it for the games it doesn't sound like he has any personal/important things on there.

I would highly suggest AVG Free, because you can run a malware scan and Anti Root-Kit scan, and it has always found malware that Malwarebytes did not find.

After that, I would recommend running a cmd prompt with chkdsk /f /r /v, and then defrag the HDD.

I would clean install but it would be a pain reinstalling all his crap. I did some registry cleaning and some scans, got rid of a little bit of malware, seems to run fine now.

Thanks for the help!
