10bit/30bit/deepColor graphics card

Hey folks,

I'm putting together a high spec computer that will principally by used for photo editing, and occasionally for watching, say, movies on Blu-Ray. I am not a gamer.

I've already received my 27" EIZO monitor that supports 10bit/RGB channel, i.e. 30bit colour reproduction. The monitor utilises displayPort to handle the signal from the computer. Windows 7 supports 10bit/30bit as does Photoshop.

The remaining link in the 10bit/30bit chain is the graphics card, which I am having great difficulty selecting. The card must have 1 miniDisplayPort and must also support 10bit/30bit colour. I am considering AMD cards.

Can anyone please help me out? I know the FirePro cards support 10bit/30bit but I had been looking at something along the lines of the HD 6870 series. The problem is that the specs make no mention of 10bit/30bit but refer instead to 'deepColor'. I think deepColor is essentially the same as 10bit/30bit but would be grateful if someone could confirm if this is true. In addition, deepColor is noted in the specs with regard to HDMI, but will it also apply to displayPort as that is the connection I will be using?

Many thanks in advance,

Rob

Thank you. :)

One more question if you don't mind: I've been doing a bit more research on the HD 6xxx series and I think my original idea of an HD 6870 may be OTT.

I've found an HD 6670 that has a displayPort and HDMI (I may use this at a later date). My research suggests that this card will be more than adequate for 2D images (my photographs) and also for watching Blu-Ray films.

Do you agree, or do you suggest shooting for a better model?

Cheers.
