dual channel?

ok so what exactly is dual and triple channel and all that and what are the benefits to it? and if i want 16 gb of ram so i would get like 4 4gb sticks, would that cancel out the benefits of dual channel?
 
The benefit is increased bandwidth. Having the additional sticks won't negate the benefits but unless you have a very strong need for 16GB I wouldn't reccomend it. It's not horrible or anything, just seems a bit excessive :)
