Does the original Portal have DRM?

I seem to recall reading that it had some form of DRM, such as SecurROM, and that was why I never wanted to install it. But now as I search again to see if this is true, I'm not finding any results.

Does anyone know if it comes with any form of DRM other than the usual Steam service itself? I have the disc version.

Thanks.

what do you mean by drm, but i had it on steam and had no issue with it installing anything other than itself.

DRM is a security measure to prevent copyright infringement. So you can't use a CD key more than once or can't rip a game from a disk, etc.
I've not got the slightest idea what the rest of your sentence means.

that made me think he meant something like the steam client, a download manager or interface or something along those lines, but for what you're saying idk, would guess it does though

I'm talking about things like SecurROM, etc. that require disc checks, online activations/connections, and the like.

Most importantly I want to know if it installs any additional software on my system, like rootkits and such.

I think most people know what I mean by DRM other than Steam.

which in my fist response i had said when i got it on steam it didn't install anything other than the game itself, no other software was added to my knowledge and even on this old pile of crap it played great.

I didn't understand your first response either, but now I do. You wouldn't necessarily know if it installed other things though. Are you sure it doesn't contain anything?

Portal definitely won't install a rootkit (or any form of virus for that matter). It does install a little bit of extra stuff though: DirectX (if you don't have it, or it needs updated), Steam (if you don't have it) and the game itself. But all those files are necessary. And none of it is DRM/monitoring software like SecuRom.

Frankly though, the fear you're invoking around DRM and rootkits makes me think you have an illegal copy of Portal. Or at the very least, paranoia.

If I had an illegal copy of the game, it would probably be *safe* from these things because pirated versions don't have DRM.

Thanks. I suppose I'll finally install it then. I bought it about two or three years ago and it's just sitting on my shelf! :)

?!?!?!Why wouldn't you install it?? Any game you buy legit is going to be safe to use. You've been missing out!

Not necessarily. I know some games (in particular Sony games or CDs, for a while at least) were coming with some pretty heavy DRM, including rootkits that could not be uninstalled, and as I said in my original post, I remember reading something about Portal having DRM, but I couldn't find what kind.
