Ram usage increases steadly????

Why does my Ram usage continue to rise while I use the PC. Once the PC is started the RAM is at 36% but once on the PC for an hour or so it goes up to 58 or 59 %. No mater what I shut down (IE, MS Word, etc) it will never go back to the 36% it started with.

Can anyone help with this, it seems to be slowing down the machine.

The PC is a Dell Studio 540
6 Gig of RAM
Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5Ghz
Windows Vista Home Premuim SP 2 64 bit

Thanks

well remeber that it loads in the graphics drivers, virus stuff, and a ton of other background programs, also you may just have a ton of bs from lack of maintnance, uninstalling unused old apps may help some, idk what else cuz my win7 with only 3gb's ram stays at ~56% all the time, and also sometimes i think it will leave programs like ie in the ram since you are likely to use it a lot.

You may be infected so do the following to scan for malware.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Ok here are the results from Malwarebytes log. I will post the log for Hijack this shortly.

on a side note, do you ever do maintnance such as disk error checks and defragmentation, these are most likely not the issue with this but they can greatly increase performance in same cases.

Getting the following message when I try to run Hijack scan

---------------------------
HijackThis
---------------------------
For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find the line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator'.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Doing a defrag now but its been running for more than 8hrs. I guess it was well overdo. Is there a way to see the defrag progress in Vista.

depends on what you use, and also running other programs isn't advised while defragging, or at least to me, since it can cause more defragging and just seems like it could screw it up some more, also this might not be helping with the hijack stuff.

You need to right click on the hijackthis icon and click on "run as". If the run as option doesn't appear then press and hold the shift key while right clicking on hijackthis to get it to appear.

Also, as suggested, you shouldn't be doing anything while defragging. Vista defrag actually sucks, I would suggest to use defraggler.

You are running windows 7, he's running Vista as vista uses a lot of memory all by itself. There also will be a difference from pc to pc.

and i do try to keep mine as up-to-date (driver wise) and maintained with defrags and such as possible, so that prob helps too

That's fine. I kind of figured you did, but not a lot of users use backup software.

Also check your task manager to find out what process is using up a high amount of memory. That should help us track it down better.

Is there a way to paste the sreen shot of the task manager in here.

idk if vista has it, but in win7 i know there is a snipping tool, then upload it to imageshack.us and there will be a forum url link, then post it, or i think there's a little thing you can click and paste it in there and it puts in the coding.

Take a screen capture and put it in paint and make it a jpg file and then attach it to your post or host it on file sharing site like photobucket or imageshack.
