Why are the still platform-exclusive games?

I'm a fan of Sony and I'm thrilled everytime a PS3 exclusive is announced. That said, I do not get why game companies would stay exclusive? I mean, as a profit maximising firm, wouldn't cross-platform make more sense? I'm very sure 3rd parties games like Uncharted, Killzone and MGS would definitely double their profit if they were cross platform.
So I'd love to hear your opinion on why 3rd parties game companies choose to stay exclusive

I think its to help sales with the console.If they believe the game will be very popular,they will more then likely make it platform exclusive.Like halo,you have to get a xbox if you want to play it.I know halo is microsoft,but just giving an example.

Exclusive titles have more of that good game aura about them. It gives the feeling that the game is going to be a lot better if the company is taking the time to perfect the game on one platform as apposed to trying to port it to every other one. And in most cases, this is true. Exclusive titles are always much more popular.

it helps deteremine who will buy which console, i bought a DS just for Pokemon even though 90% of DS games are shite. People will go for a console if it has a game that is only on that console

and totally agree, i bought a 360 purely for gears of war and left 4 dead even though it meant paying for online...surfice to say i learned from my mistake and sold it for my pc

haha yeah you do come to your sense, after a few months of EV training pokemon i was like screw this and now its collecting dust. Give it a year or so and ill sell my DS

yeah, i agree with that and i think that's one of the stronger reasons why games remain exclusive.
While it's true that exclusives help the console to increase their fanbase, i dont really see a direct effect on the 3rd party companies themselves. I mean, unless the console is holding a really large market share, like back in the PS2 days, 3rd parties dont really gain a lot by siding with one company.

fact is, exclusives make it good, thats why the xbox 360 is the best console, it has the bast games, halo, gears, left 4 dead and forza, he game that pretty much made FPS was halo, it revolutionized the whole genre, then gears you have the ultimate 3rd person gameplay experience, left 4 dead being the ultimate zombie game and then forze the best racing game around, thats why xbox 360 is so much beter, and ps3 lacks really any good exclusive titles and has a really bad online system

haha, totally beside the point, but yeah, i do agree with you on gears and perhaps even Forza. But PS3 has tons of exclusives like Uncharted, MSG, God of War and Killzone, just to name a few. Im not sure about other online games since i only play Killzone 3 multiplayer but i never have a problem with it. I wont go on lest this turn into a debate on which console is better, which as i've witnessed, can never really end

The Uncharted series is awesome.

I went with the PS3 because I liked the exclusives better on it. It also seemed, at the time, that the xbox games came out on PC as well. I agree that L4D1 and 2 are great. I just couldn't imagine playing them with a controller.

I don't like to get caught up in system debates. They both are good systems. It always comes down to what individual games you want to play. Demon Souls is another outstanding PS3 game. The xbox crowd is lucky that Dark Souls will be on both.
