Processor not up to capacity

I ran a test on my system with 3dmark06 (free Version).

I have a HP Pavilion 9400t w. Intel Core 2 Quad processor 9400 2.66ghz
8gb Ram

The test said it was slow. The CPU was real slow. It said there was 1 core and 1 processor. How can this be? I upgraded the bios and speed improved slightly but still said 1 core, 1 processor. Can anyone help me get this processor up to where it should be working?

Right click on the task bar, click start task manager, click performance tab. How many cores does it show you have?

just so you know, the cpu test is MEANT to run quite slowly. its not supposed to be smooth and pretty, its just a number crunching program.

Your processor could be "Parked", and that could be a result of your cpu saying that this program does not require the extra processing power. Do what stranglehold said.

It doesnt say.

OK, I am at work today away from my computer (24 hour shift firefighter). I will do this first thing in the morning.

OK, had the wife try it at home. She went to view and she said it only says one graph per CPU and it's greyed out. Any ideas?

If vista or 7, click start, in the search box, type "msconfig" without the quotes and press enter. click on the boot tab, click on advanced options, click the box next to number of processors and change it to 4 and reboot to see what happens.

yup your only running on one core! do the msconfig thing, and if that doesnt work you will have to enter the bios to enable the other 3 cores.

only has option for 1. Looks like I'll need to do something in the BIOS. I did update the other date to the newest. How do I enable the others in the BIOS?

I am just curious. How old is this processor? Did you have it overclocked before?

I am just wondering if you were running extremely hot and fried the 3 cores. Which to me doesn't make sense cause i would suspect that you would burn the whole vs 3/4.

Question then pops up, why are you only running 1 core? What happened to change it?

You should find that out, i'm curious :P

Good question. The computer is a few years old. I got the Core 2 Quad when it was the latest and greatest because of the video and photo editing that I do so I spent money on the processor. I have no idea how to overclock or even attempt it so I'm not sure how it went bad.

I hit F10 to enter setup (says that on the boot screen) which I am assuming is the BIOS and there is info there with not many options. I checked google to see if there is possibly a different BIOS scfeen and they say hit F1 on all Pavilions but holding that down does nothing for my computer.

Loaded default values from BIOS and no change

I did some google searching and installed an applet called EasyBCD. Followed the instructions and it seems to have fixed the issue. I now see 4 graphs. gonna run a test to see if it has sped up at all

How many cores does it show under processor in device manager? Try resetting the bios by using optimum defaults then save and exit.

It shows 4. reset the bios didnt do anything. I found some instructions online and used this EasyBCD applet. It now shows all 4 graphs and the 3DMark tests came out much improved. Still not sure why it wasnt originally set but I did read that HP sometimes sets it to 1 core. Wonder if I've been running this way the whole time and the large video edit project Im working on finally revealed the weakness.

I guess I'll just leave it like this since it's working
