Just bought a new computer with windows 7 and Staples offered to make the recovery discs for $40. How can I make these discs myself?

That is a repair disk not a true recovery disk that you get from the pc maker. It won't allow you to reinstall windows if the hard drive crashes.

or you could use the backup and recovery program to create a disk image, although if something happened to your PC, you'd need a Windows installation disk to access the image.

lol that's pretty scummy if they charge for something that's already available on the computer. Like John said, most OEMs will allow you to create your own disks in a matter of minutes.
