Setting up a "virtual computer"

I have some programs that worked on my computer when I had windows xp on it but my school required me to upgrade to windows 7 and now some programs don't work like they used to. The two I have found so far that don't work are "N the way of the ninja" and "jetpack". I heard about setting up a "virtual machine" (in my case windows xp) that I can used to run programs that worked on it but don't work on my current operating system (windows 7).

Is this possible? If so, how do I do it?
 
What version of Win 7 do you have? If you have Pro or Ultimate you can download "XP Mode" here: virtual pc download.

If you have Home Premium then you could download Oacle's VirtualBox.

The advantage to using XP Mode over VirtualBox is that XP Mode includes a licensed version of XP, whereas with VirtualBox you will need to supply your own copy of XP. I actually like Virtualbox better.

Another option is VMWare Player.

Both VirtualBox and VMWare Player are free downloads.

I have installed xp mode but can't figure out how to use or run it.

I have also installed VMware but I think it requires me to have a windows xp install disc (which I don't have). Unless, is there a way to make a xp virtual computer without it?

There are 2 parts to XP Mode, the Virtual PC software and the Virtual XP machine. Did you download and install both?

Yes, as I stated in my post above, you will need to supply your own copy of XP to use other virtual software such as VirtualBox and VMWare.
