Using a found iPhone 4.

Hey guys, I found an iPhone 4 about 3 months ago while walking to a fast food restraunt from my college. I tried in all ways to make contact with the owner, but never recieved phone calls as the service was terminated when I found it, and the phone had a password.. I then turned it into the local police where they logged it in and said they will give it 3 months.

I now am "technically" the owner of the phone and wondering if i can use it as my own. I have already restored/reset the phone, but now it is asking for my microsim which i dont have.

Can I juat take it to my AT&T store and request for a microsim to use the phone? Or is there a whole bunch of stuff I have to do?

So do you currently have AT&T? If so you should be able to just swap the SIM card out of your current phone into the iPhone. Then again, if you have a standard SIM card that cannot be trimmed to a microSIM, then yes you'll have to go to AT&T.

If you do not have a microsim then you can just get one with at&t which I think they are like $10 if I remember right from when I had them, but what kind of cell plan do you have cause smart phones require a certain data plan.

Right now I have an HTC Inspire which requires the data plan, so yes, i have the required data plan. And yes I have AT&T.

I also have a regular sin card so I guess ill have to go buy a MicroSim from the store.

What carrier was the iPhone on? You'll have to either use the same carrier as the sim card that came out or unlock it to use it with any carrier. If it's an AT&T Microsim that came out it's just a matter of either putting yours in if it's a microsim or to buy one and switch your account to the new microsim.

I always thought Microsims were a stupid idea, let's make simple things like this more complicated

+1. The iPhone will likely be locked to the original carrier.

If you plan to use the same carrier as the one you use, you can just walk in and change sim cards. If the phone is locked to a different carrier, you can jailbreak the phone and run any sim card from any carrier in the phone. Problem is that if the jailbreak leaves, so does phone using.

*Jailbreaking is legal in Canada and the US, not sure about other countries*

Can i get the iphone? I really can't afford to pay $400 for one but if you really that nice to return it back to the original owner, you might be able to help me out by providing me a smartphone. Thanks

Well here an iPhone 4 on AT&T goes for $199-299 with a new 2 year contract, $400-500 without a contract.

You missed the big hooplah?

In response to a request by the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the U.S. Copyright Office explicitly recognized an exemption to the DMCA to permit jailbreaking in order to allow iPhone owners to use their phones with applications that are not available from Apple's store, and to unlock their iPhones for use with unapproved carriers.[24][25] Apple had previously filed comments opposing this exemption and indicated that they did consider jailbreaking to be a violation of copyright (and by implication prosecutable under the DMCA). Apple's request to define copyright law to include jailbreaking as a violation was denied as part of the 2009 DMCA rulemaking. In their ruling, the Library of Congress affirmed on July, 26, 2010 that jailbreaking is exempt from DMCA rules with respect to circumventing digital locks. This exemption must be reviewed and renewed every three years or else it will expire.
Tim Wu, a professor at Columbia Law School, argued that jailbreaking is "legal, ethical, and just plain fun."[26] Wu cited an explicit exemption issued by the Library of Congress in 2006 for personal unlocking, which notes that locks "are used by wireless carriers to limit the ability of subscribers to switch to other carriers, a business decision that has nothing whatsoever to do with the interests protected by copyright" and thus do not implicate the DMCA.[27] Wu did not claim that this exemption applies to those who help others unlock a device or "traffic" in software to do so. As of July 26, 2010, The U.S. Copyright Office has approved exemptions to the DMCA that allow iDevice users to Jailbreak their devices legally.[28] These exemptions also allow phone users to unlock their phone in order to switch carriers.[29] It is still possible Apple may employ technical countermeasures to prevent jailbreaking or prevent jailbroken phones from functioning, but they will not be able to sue users who jailbreak.[30] It is also unclear whether it is legal to traffic in the tools used to make jailbreaking easy.

It's way more then that off-contract, you're talking $650 for the 16GB and $750 for the 32GB.

You can buy new ones on ebay/kijiji for 450ish for the 16GB.... thinking that is what he is referring to
