PSU Help

My system has been freezing and stuff and now I think it is possible that it is the power supply causing it. I need some help finding a new one to replace it. The computer is the one in my sig. How many watts do I need. Or better yet, recommend me one that is under $40.

I would like to have room for upgrading the CPU and adding RAM. I really don't have much money though.

If you don't plan on upgrading the gpu then the 430 watt corsair is fine. The most you would need is the 500 watt which is the first link I posted.

Is it possible that the one that I currently have (in my sig) could cause freezing? And be failing with my rig?

Freezing could be caused by a few different things.. memory, bad hard drive, psu, malware, motherboard. And it could take a long time diagnosing the exact cause. I would start by testing the hard drive to make sure its not failing on you first. If you aren't sure you can do this yourself then you may have to take it in and pay a small diagnosis fee. But they can usually tell within an hour the exact cause, instead of guessing what it could be.

I made this thread about the issue:

I was going to replace the GPU, but I really don't think that it is the problem. I have more of a feeling that it is the PSU, which needs to be replaced anyway.

In summary, I pulled the GPU and the computer works fine. Means it is either the GPU or the PSU. I think it is more likely that the PSU is at fault.

You dont know anybody that has a computer you could test the video card in? DiabloTech is junk and you would be wise to replace it anyway.

I would probably go with a 500/550W power supply to give you alittle overhead if you ever upgrade your video card.

A power supply is nothing you want to skimp on (money-wise). A 550W-650W PSU should be sufficient. That being said:

Thats way overkill, any good 400w PSU would be just fine.

This one would do you just right. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026

If you plan on upgrading your GPU, than this 500w would be good. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027

But like I said, a good 400w PSU would be more than enough for what you got know.

The PSU calculator I used for my system said 230 for me, so this should be fine. 230 sounds a bit strange though.

Well, I got the Corsair 430w and so far I love it. This new one must weight twice as much as the old Diablotech one. The fan is twice as quiet.

I kinda feel a bit incompetent for saying this, but I was wrong about the wattage of the old PSU. It's funny considering that I bought it and installed it. It was a while ago though and for a different build. It was a 400w Diablotech. Might that have caused problems on my rig?

A good 400 watt psu would have no problems pushing that rig. Diablotek is just junk quality is all.

The heavier the psu the better quality it is. Thats why OEM and cheap psu's are so light.
