Windows XP too slow

Hello everybody!
I have a big problem with my desktop pc.The computer where running fine until a couple of days ago I have turned the system on and the boot time was very long(about 3min or more). When I get finally in to the Windows is running on 28% load and is very slow. When is loaded in all the applications a few minutes is running fine suddenly jumps up on 25-30% load and is slowing the PC down so much that I have to wait to open Mozilla about 3 min.So I was fed up with this and I have reinstalled the OS.Now I have only the printer software, mozilla , nero ,winrar and acrobat reader installed on my pc but I still have the same issues.
When I have assembled my pc I have extracted a 2GB movie around 1 min.Now it takes more than 8 min because the counter stops and something is slowing the whole pc down :confused::mad::mad: So at this stage I have no idea what to do...
My comp consist of: MSI P7N SLI Platinum - mobo
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 2.4Ghz
2 x 1GB Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066 Mhz
MSI 8800 Ultra 768 MB DDR3
250 GB WD 7200 rpm HDD
OS Windows XP Professional SP3 (genuine)

So you reinstalled your entire OS.Did you first delete ALL the partitions before installing or did you install it over the old one?Because if you did it over the old one,it's a good chance that something malicious is still on your HDD.

If you did it properly, try this:

-In the device manager under the IDE ATA/ATAPI CONTROLLERS check ALL the devices there and be sure that the transfer mode for all is DMA and not PIO...

-Do you hear any weird sounds from your HDD?No matter what,go to BIOS and turn on the option called HDD S.M.A.R.T. CAPABILITY and then save BIOS changes. On the next boot it will tell you wether your HDD is dying or not...

-Are your RAM chips old or damaged? To check that use free programs such as MemTest...

-What is the temperature of your processor (CPU) ?It should not be above 60 because if it's above 60,CPU is very very hot and that will affect the computer's performance a LOT.Optimal temperatures are from 30 to 40.Mine is 35.So if the temperatures are high, replace the thermal paste...

-Did you maybe by any chance overclocked the CPU in the BIOS?If yes, return all the changed settings to their default values or simply LOAD OPTIMAL DEFAULTS and save BIOS changes to CMOS...

-Are the fans/ventilators spin fast and properly in the right direction on the CPU cooler and graphic card (if any) ?

-Is your HDD very hot?HDDs are usually warm while they are being used, but it should not be VERY VERY hot...

-Did you change any hardware components recently?

-How big is the system temperature? It should not be bigger than 30 - 40.Mine is 25 - 28 all the time.

-How exactly did you format the HDD before installing Windows? You might try to convert all it's sectors to all zeros using KILL DISK before installing Windows OS...

Let us know the results of the above questions.

Cheers!

Hi!
Thank You for your post and sorry for the late relpy.I try to answer step by step on all your questions.
1.My HDD is separated on 3 partitions. The C: is where the OS is installed.I have formatted the HDD in command prompt with the installation disc and then I have installed the new OS on drive C: (no partitions deleted)
2.I did check the device manager and the transfer mode is DMA everywhere
3.I have enabled the HDD S.M.A.R.T function but is not coming up with any error.
4. 0 errors found after testing the memory modules
5.The CPU temp is 33C and it was overclocked to 3Ghz but I have reseted all the values on stock settings.
6.The system temp is 32C all the fans are running 3 x 80mm zalman fan is blowing cold air into the case and one 120mm zalman fan and a PCI slot fan is blowing the warm air out from the case. The( CPU cooler is Zalman CPS9500 ups)
7.The HDD is not warm at all
8.No hardware changes made recently.
After checking all this I still have the same issues....:(

I suggest you to start scanning your system for malware. Please do this in order posted.

1.

Please download and run TDSSkiller

When the program opens, click on the start scan button.

TDSSKiller will now scan your computer for the TDSS infection. When the scan has finished it will display a result screen stating whether or not the infection was found on your computer. If it was found it will display a screen similar to the one below.

infection-found.jpg

To remove the infection simply click on the Continue button and TDSSKiller will attempt to clean the infection.

When it has finished cleaning the infection you will see a report stating whether or not it was successful as shown below.

scan-completed.jpg

If the log says will be cured after reboot, please reboot the system by pressing the reboot now button.

After running there will be a log that will be located at the root of your c:\ drive labeled tdsskiller with a series of numbers after it. Please open the log and copy and paste it back here.

2.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here or here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. Please keep updating until it says you have the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If for some reason Malwarebytes will not install or run please download and run Rkill.scr, Rkill.exe, or Rkill.com. If you are still having issues running rkill then try downloading these renamed versions of the same program.

EXPLORER.EXE
IEXPLORE.EXE
USERINIT.EXE
WINLOGON.EXE

But DO NOT reboot the system and then try installing or running Malwarebytes. If Rkill (which is a black box) appears and then disappears right away or you get a message saying rkill is infected, keep trying to run rkill until it over powers the infection and temporarily kills it. Once a log appears on the screen, you can try running malwarebytes or downloading other programs.

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

When the hijackthis log appears in a notepad file, click on the edit menu, click select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Come back to your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log.

The next step would be to download and run ccleaner.

http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

Download, install and then open the program, don't change any settings, click on run cleaner. This may take a few minutes to complete depending on the last time temp files were deleted. After running, reboot your system and see if there has been any improvement. If not, there are other issues, possibly a failing hard drive.

ccleaner scan done I have restarted my PC but the boot time is still very long... is running ok a while in the next minute is on 30% load.....

Open task manager and tell me what process is using most of the cpu/memory.

What brand of hard drive do you have? IDE or SATA?

Boot to Windows, once that is done close ALL opened programs including those which are running in the background, open the task manager,go to the PERFORMANCE tab and tell us how big is the CPU USAGE (on the left) when the system is idle for at least 10 minutes?

Because if it jumps too high very often (over 20% or even 40%) and you are not running anything then something in Windows OS is using your processor a lot.So do what johnb35 said and go to the PROCESSES tab and take a look at each process and the one which uses the most of the CPU is the cause.Try to terminate that process and see if it improved anything.

Report back with the results.

Cheers mates!

Hi!
My HDD is SATA.There is only the anti-virus updater is running on the background and the task manager both values are 01 under the CPU.The app is called vsserv.exe. But this is the only application and something is slowing it down that much that I cant even write a text into google search..
After the update finishes is running fine then suddenly from nothing jumps up on 27-30% and when I open the task manager is shows only on the task manager app is using 01 CPU.And the HDD LED is not flashing is constantly on....

So under the PROCESSES tab, there is not a single process which is using too much RAM (Mem Usage) or/and CPU?

Try putting a check mark at the check box at the bottom of the window which says "Show processes from all users".Then close and reopen the task manager and see if now you can see any process(es) which use too much RAM (Mem Usage) or/and CPU.

By the way...how XP works in Safe Mode?Is it also slow or better?

You can also try to boot Linux Ubuntu computer operating system from the CD-ROM disk and see how it works. If that ALSO works very slow then something is wrong with your hardware and NOT the software.

Try all that above and report back.

Cheers!

Under the processes tab the only applications witch are using the CPU and memory is the task manager, the anti virus updater, windows explorer sometimes jumps up to 01 on CPU.But all this is only 01 on CPU the max used memory is 24,368 K witch is not too much.So this is the reason why I dont get this....Nearly nothing is running on the system just the windows applications and the antivirus and the system is loaded on 27% but is looks like if is running on 100% load because for minutes everything is freezing on the screen.
I have tried under safe mode.It works perfectly.Very fast under 10 sec in the Windows..no issues under safe mode..

So Windows works okay in safe mode...that is a good news because now we know it is not the hardware issue. If Windows works so slow in normal mode after all you tryed,it can be that a specific amount of important Windows OS data is either corrupted or the HDD sectors on which it is located are messed up or even damaged.Because if they are, that WILL cause a LOT of problems. So here is what you should do:

-backup ALL your important data...
-now you will need to write zeros to EACH sector on your HDD by using special tools for that.I recommend a DOS tool called KILL DISK.

NOTE: When kill disk writes zeros to all HDD sectors, all your data on that HDD is gone forever so be sure you back up everything!

-When kill disk is finished, install Windows XP again.Just be sure to choose the NORMAL SLOW format and NOT the QUICK one!It is called "Format the partition using the NTFS file system".

-Finish the Windows OS installation and after that install ONLY your drivers and NOTHING else.Once you have done that, restart your computer for several times and if after all that computer works normal then the problem is solved. If computer works super slow again, then your HDD is probably dying.

Try this and report back.If you do not have XP installation disk, get it from someone because you need it.

Cheers!

Hello everybody!
Sorry for the late relpy but I had to order a 500GB external desktop HDD to backup all my data.So I have deleted all the partitions and created new (only two this time), formatted with NTFS file system, reinstalled the OS and the result is very good:D:D
I get the XP Welcome screen around 10 seconds and the PC is very fast.
I have to say Thank You to everybody who posted comments to this thread and gave me good advices.
Once again....Thanks!!!:good:

Sonia had Java packages on her machine that were slowing it way down. Also, I don't entirely trust MS. When an OS gets old, and they want you to BUY their new one, I wouldn't put it past them to slip something ugly into their "Updates". Out of curiosity, are you using Windopes "Automatic Update" ?

That is why I don't use updates :P ...at all :P
But if what you are saying is true then that kinda sucks what Microsoft is doing. They really should not be doing that.

Windows updates are worhless..........

Oh finally! :D
Believe it or not,you are the FIRST person here who actually agrees with me haha!Because 99% of people say that updating system all the time is good when actually is not since you are just risking it like hell all until you don't get a constant BSOD :D
They say that updates are good for the security and system stability lmao.I say:"If you want security, install, configure properly and update a good antivirus software. If you want system stability, don't keep updating system like nuts and rather learn how to use computers :D "

Just yeasterday I was fixing someone's laptop which had XP OS installed and I found more than 150 updates installed.I asked her:"Do you know what all this is for?" She said:"No." Then I asked her:"So why did you install SO many of these called UPDATES?" And she said:"Someone told me that my computer will work better with that."
And guess what! She said that after she installed all these updates, that she can now barely surf the internet and that everything works like crap hahaha!!! I wonder why is that happening to her lmao!

The problem is that people THINK that having all the newest is the BEST while that is not stricty true. What they need is KNOWLEDGE in order to know what is good and what not.Because all newest things are not always better or/and neccessary.Hell I NEVER EVER update my XP system and everything works prefect not to mention that I installed XP on my old PC in 2004. and they still work perfect. Also my computer hardware is almost 20 years old and it works better than the newest hardware to some people. Why? The answer is simple: THEY SIMPLY DO NOT KNOW HOW TO USE COMPUTERS AND EVEN THE STRONGEST HARDWARE AND ALL UPDATES WILL NOT HELP THEM AT ALL ;)
People usually laugh at me when I tell them how weak my configuration is,but I simply tell them:"Laugh if you want, but I am not the one who is having problems with every single software and who reinstalls Windows OS every few weeks."

Cheers!
