Went to Windows 7 for one day.

So I installed windows 7 home premium 64 bit legal copy for 24 hours. The experience was less then pleasant, the install itself went smooth and easy but it is what happen after that. I had to install every driver and when I went to install the driver that controls my utilities like screen and sound buttons a error message would come up that would not go away until I put the computer in hibernate and remove the battery and even after that the error message would still come up. I then installed the item that was meant to fix that and still had issues so then I just removed that individual driver.

Then the Windows update, I think there was a total of 110 but of course it could not do that all at once, had to divide those 110 up among three different update and reboots. Then Still wondering why M$ does not include all there software like M$ security essentials and Windows Live Essentials. Nope I had to go physically download that and then after I rebooted it felt the need to do a HDD scan which I have not seen one of those in forever. Then not all the software didn't work all the way like Windows chat, when I connected it to my facebook it would at random show people logging in and out.

I was considering going back to Windows only because I do miss my Zune Pass and the integration with the xbox but the install and use was to painful, maybe because I have been using Ubuntu to long where I am use to getting a install, updates and necessary software in about 30 minutes and it just works.

Just wanted to let you know my 24 hour user experience with Windows 7

I've been using Win 7 for over 2 years now on quite a few different computers and haven't had as many problems as you claim you had within your first 24 hours!
 
Im partial to linux but i have never heard of anyone having that many issues with win7 either... drivers always installed correctly without intervention and such...

and furthermore, if MS started including their virus software and a lot of extra 'their' software people would just complain that they are trying to impose their products upon their consumers.
 
I am not claiming anything, just telling you what actually happened. I usually have had a decent experience with the install of Windows on my Dells. I think I was more pointing out how windows should stream line there install of OS and drivers like some Linux distrobutions have. How does a free OS out do them like that?
 
No offence,but you kinda deserve that happening to you if you install 110 updates lol...I am pretty sure you do not need all of them.In fact...you probably do not need a single one.
Do you even know for what each one of all those 110+ updates are for except for "UPDATING"???The word "UPDATE" is a huge term...
Because if you don't know and ESPECIALLY if you do not need them all,but install them anyway (like most of the poeple -_- ) then do not expect beautiful results...

Windows OS is a great OS and it is apcapable for everything.
Do not expect OS to work good no matter how new and beautiful it is if you do not have knowledge of how to use it properly.

And believe me...I know many people who say that they DO KNOW,but still they install TONS of updates (which they do not need and even do not know for what they are for) and after that they complain that their system works like crap.Yea right...they have knowledge...LMAO!
It's so stupid installing tons and tons and tons of updates.No offence to anyone of course,but I am pretty sure that many people would agree wth me.I installed XP on my old computer in 2004. and it still works perfectly...

Just how is not knowing that updates, which are usually intended to fix problems and security issues, would be a major nuisance "not having knowledge how to use it properly"? If I have twenty or so important updates available, I won't read through Microsoft's generic and often unhelpful descriptions as to what particular security vulnerability they fix thinking "yea I probably don't need that", I will install them. And if I need to reboot more than once, I'm going to be mighty unimpressed, especially if the system doesn't work properly afterwards.

Nobody deserves problems for wanting their system to be up to date.

And believe me...I know many people who say that they DO KNOW,but still they install TONS of updates (which they do not need and even do not know for what they are for) and after that they complain that their system works like crap.Yea right...they have knowledge...LMAO!

Honestly, if one needs to be knowledgeable and experienced to keep their system up to date without issues, I think it's entirely reasonable for them to be unhappy with it. That's hardly the user's fault.

No it isn't, and no I don't agree with you. What, you expect me to be stuck with an old version of Windows because of the off chance that updating will nuke my system? What about all the usability issues that I want fixed? Do I have to go through every update, thinking "yea... that sounds like something I might need"? What about security fixes? Would I have to go through each one thinking "that probably doesn't apply to me" or "it can't be THAT serious" and untick them?

The purpose of Windows update is to deliver updates. The point of these updates is to fix problems or sometimes add features. If I have to dance around in fears that installing an arbitrarily high number of updates will cause more problems than they fix, I'm going to say that the update system is severely broken.

Wow. You do realize that, by default, Microsoft wants you to set up automatic updates so that all new updates install by themselves? These updates aren't tailored to specific people, they are meant to improve Windows 7 itself. The only ones that are suppose to be optional are the ones under the "optional" tab.

Actually unlike most people I look into my updates, a majority of them are bug fixes and security fixes. Plus have you used Linux and that just does not mean installing it, it actually means used it to its full potential? Until you have then you can never claim Windows to be a great OS, not saying Windows is bad but nothing like Ubuntu, Fedora or Opensuse in security, performance and options with what you can do.

Was XP really mentioned? One of the worst Windows OS in terms of security features and a poorly supported 64 bit design for drivers.

I like Windows 7 as long as I do not have to set it up, I will never say it is better then Linux mainly for the fact I can run 4-6 programs at once and still not use over 1 GB of memory which is important when you use some of the programs I do and 4 GB on Windows is not enough where as on Ubuntu it is.

It's the opposite, Windows Update shows you updates that are needed/recommended for your machine and your hardware, it won't install updates that aren't needed or that are for hardware which you don't have.

To the OP, after installing updates I never have issues with Windows 7, I've installed it on several machines from high end gaming rigs to few year old Netbooks, not one required me to manually download a driver.
 
another satisfied ubuntu user. once you learn that platform, I suppose there's no reason to go to windows, unless you require it for gaming.
