I Can't Overclock :(

Hi i recently installed the Coolermaster Hyper 212 Cooler for my CPU but when i try to overclock my Q8300 (Core 2 Quad) i can only get to 2.54GHZ :( when the factory speed is 2.5ghz. When i put the frequency any higher my computer freezes and i have to restart it (whilst it resets the CPU frequency .

There are lots of issues that could be happening, just to name a few:

Check to make sure the memory and PCI-E bus speed are not being overclocked as well, most motherboards allow those to be set individually. (It's ideal to keep the memory linked, but this will help rule that out as an issue)

You may need to raise the CPU voltage as well. You should be able to get higher then 40MHz on stock voltage, not sure why you can't.

Also make sure you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard (check the manufacturers website).

There are lots of other possibilities, but it takes a lot of trial and error to be able to overclock efficiently.

When i go to check if i need more voltage i have NB VOltage , VTT Voltage and GLref Voltage and DRAM Voltage. Now i knoe the DRAM is the RAM Voltage but which is the CPU ??

what are you overclocking by, the fsb or the multiplier, the multiplier is the easier and safer of the two.

also there are some motherboard chipsets that do not support overclocking from what i've heard, so that may be another issue.

It says the CPU Frequency But i think thats the same as the multiplier. And my paticular motherboard came with OC Software so i think thats a sure fire sign that it supports overclocking.

Software overclocking is crap, stick with doing it in the bios.

What motherboard do you have specifically? And then what ram, and what settings are they currently on? As in speed, timings, and voltage.

None of those voltages you mentioned are your CPU voltage.

The stock multiplier on that chip is 7.5, it will not go any higher. Stock FSB is 333.

After I get those base questions answered I can help more.

I have a G41C-VS Motherboard 4GB DDR3 Ram at 1066MHZ at 1.64 VOLTZ. I also tried to overclock in the bios and got the same result. If the voltages i mentioned arent the CPU ones then i can't find the CPU voltage

A G41 board is not going to overclock a quad core very well at all, but you should be able to get to atleast 3ghz anyway (400 fsb x 7.5).

What are the specs of your ram? Like what does it say on the stick? Is it really only 1066 or is it 1333....etc?

I will try to look up the bios for that board.

I am now planning to sell parts of my current PC and UPGRADE TO AN AMD SYSTEM !!! i'm gonna make another thread asking opinions on my suggested setup :) Thank - YOU 87dtna

I just look up the board and see if it's in the bios options.

Any newer AMD board will have overclocking and overvolting.

What kind of budget do you have? I'd be happy to help.

Well actually clock for clock Phenom II actually gets beat out by the 12mb cache C2Q's, but he only has the lowest end 4mb cache quad.

Plus, any Phenom II he gets will be able to clock closer to 4ghz, and he's only at 2.5 now so it will be quite an upgrade.

OP- If you can swing the cost I really recommend a 960t- It's really a 1090t with cores disabled, there's a chance you can unlock it to a 6 core cpu, but even if not it's a very powerful quad core and overclocks VERY well.
