Re-format HDD

So my dad had a problem with his desktop computer and a friend of his told him to backup his data and then re-format it. This, of course, wiped everything out. Now I'm not that great with computers but I did know that I needed to re-install the OS and the drivers. The OS installed fine for the most part. The only problem is that for some reason, I can't change any display settings in the Control Panel. And my dad only gave me two discs that said contained drivers. So I also popped those in and figured that they installed. But I don't think it actually installed anything... What should I do now? How do I get a full list of drivers that I need?

Go to the manufacturers website and download the needed drivers to a flash drive.

Duh

After reading your comment, I felt like banging my head on the table. This is really embarassing...
Excuse: I did say that I wasn't very good at computers.
Thanks for the help though. :D

Ok so I downloaded the necessary drivers from the manufacturer's website to my flash drive but it says unknown file type when I put it on my dad's computer. This is really stressing me out.

Are they just the EXE or ZIP files you downloaded?

what's the make and model of the computer?

That means its an .exe. Unless the install is corrupt, it should work no problem. I have actually seen this happen once where no exe's would work after a fresh install. You can try downloading exehelper and see if that works.

http://raktor.net/exeHelper/exeHelper.com

Just download and run it and then try running the exe files again.

What operating system are you using? Can you give us a screenshot of what the files look like?

Its Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2. And here's a screenshot of the files when I'm using my laptop. I'll try and get a screenshot of the files on my dad's computer as soon as I can but that would be tomorrow.

Ok, I have a feeling that you downloaded those files using Dell's download manager. You need to go back and download them again using your own browser.

I really hate that thing. It confuses too many people.

Actually I downloaded each driver separately. I just clicked download for each one instead of using the dell download manager for a multiple download.

In that case they should download as .EXE files named R(xxxxx).

What's the service tag of your computer?
