AMD processor for gaming purposes

Actually, that's the one AMD chip you probably don't want to buy for gaming. It is fairly good, but frankly there's a lot better to be had for the money (those bulldozer chips were a bit of a flop, they're new and have a whole host of performance issues to be worked out). Even AMD's own older chips would be better for gaming. If you want AMD, I would rather recommend a quad- or even 6-core Phenom II. Of course, if you're building a new computer rather than upgrading, you might want to consider Intel as well.
 
Yes I always put Intel chips in the first place, now I stumbled over this AMD chip and I liked the price compared to specs.

I will probably always go with Intel chip though... I prefer GPU from AMD on the other hand
 
Well for gaming go for the 2500k, but truly you will notice no difference in game from a phenom ii 965/55. Would you like for us to look at the rest of your build to get some opinions?
 
Not necessarily true ^^^

If hes gaming at a lower resolution he will see increase with the 2500k in fps. Games like GTA iv will also improve in fps with the 2500k i presume.
 
improving and improving noticeably are different, it shouldn't be over 2/3 fps difference and at the point where it is more it's generally getting over 100fps so that doesn't matter.
 
well on another one the 2500k was 51 frames better, but on all of them, like i said above, it makes no difference as the frame rate is well above the human eye's ability to tell so there will be no difference to the user, making the 2500k better for benches, but for the money i'd still take a 965 and put the rest to other stuff every day, what's odd thought, i thought all the i5's killed the phenoms no matter the model, but other than gaming on anandtech the 980 basically beats the 750 in most things other than gaming where they are semi-close. but yes i would take a 2500k over the 965 if both where in front of me for free
 
Tbh, if the monitor is 120hz, then 50 probably will be noticable to 80, saying that i was thinking more about number crunching than practicality :P so i guess in that sense you are right :P
 
i wish i just could get that many frames at all and to try it on a 120hz monitor :( parents are gone and tempted to boot up dad's imac and install steam or something real quick so i can completely max out tf2 at 1080p on his i7-860 and HD4850 :D

@OP, depending on your budget i would go for the 2500k, but if you have a low budget youd be better off getting a phenom 2 of some sort, a really good mobo, and a decent cooler. Oc the crap out of it and away you go.

As has been said if you only have a 60hz monitor anyway you wont see a difference, unles syou are playing at low res in which case i would try hardest to go for the 2500k.
 
Phenom II 960t with ASRock 970 Extreme4 board is where it's at for bang for the buck gaming.

Chance to unlock the 960t to a 1090t hex core, but even if not there is NO game the 960t won't play with more than enough frame rates (if you have a strong enough card).

You cannot beat that performance for CPU and board under $250.

Forget the 955 anymore, the 960t is a thuban 95w....they overclock better, run a little cooler, have stronger memory controllers, and can possibly unlock to 5 or 6 cores....all for $5 more.

Dont get me wrong, the 1090t is my next upgrade but its there in black and white. Some games really do increase in performance with the 2500k. Most wont, but some will.

But there's no mention on what GPU he is using. If he has a lower-medium end GPU, the CPU won't even get the chance to see its full potential because of the GPU bottlenecking it.

Now, if he's planning on SLIing 2 580s, then the i5 is the right choice.

Would the GIGABYTE GA-970A-D3 Socket AM3+ Motherboard work with the Phenom II 960T processor?

The human eye doesn't work like that at all.

The difference of 30FPS is massive and anything less than 60FPS is noticable especially on first person shooters. The whole 'human eye' thing is a big bloody myth you see on computer forums all the time.

Of course if the monitor can only output 60Hz, then anything over 60FPS is pointless, but 60FPS is much much better than 30FPS.
