Building a 64 bit system

(should read Building a 64 bit system, could a mod please change it :) thanks)

I'm a bit out of touch with all this so I suppose I'm just asking for some advice

first things first i need to now if its plausible to buy or build a tower with a quad core and a decent amount of ram for £250 absolute max, cheaper if possible.

I don't mind using second hand bits or just buying a second hand system. but like I say I'm way out of touch on this one so I don't know what a good processor is or what Pc#### no ram were up to or what graphics cards are any use after the Nvidia 8800.

obviously I'm not going to be looking at the top spec bits because of my price range but I still don't know what the affordable parts are from the previous generation

I'm going to be using it for, Photo and video editing and internet use, I wont be playing many games on it at all as my Xbox takes that duty these days.
needs to run windows 7 64bit of adobe premier and after effects cs5

cheers for any help you can offer :).

Long time no see to everyone who knows me

Edit: I don't need any other bit as I already the monitors and key board mouse speakers and external cables that I'm going to use

Shameless plug here, if you want you could buy my Corsair HX520 and 8800GTS 512. I'd give you 'special' discount...

For the OS, get it from 'Software for Students' while you can; it's so worth it. I think I paid £40 for W7 Pro 64.

RAM is pretty damn cheap these days, so that shouldn't be a problem. A Q6600 would probably be ideal for the CPU, too. I'd imagine there's a few knocking around on here or Ebay pretty cheap. I've got a stock Intel cooler and some Arctic Silver 5 that you could use, too.

I've just checked and I have a Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 (rev. 3.3) which I think is working, so you could use that too if you wanted?

Then you'd really just need a case, a CPU and a DVD drive (which I might also have!) haha

Yeah man, you can read the glorified specs that will totally persuade you to buy it on Gigabyte's site;
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=2456#ov

I think you could easily get a system down in your price range!

i'd be looking on ebay at a phenom ii x4 955 or 965, a gigabyte mobo on the 880 chipset, although 700's would work and 900's would be better. then 2x2gb's of ddr3 1600mhz would be pretty cheap. for graphics look for either that 8800 or an hd5670 or a hd5770 or 6770, the last 2 are higher end but aren't too bad price wise. and a case would just depend on what's left after it all

I'm pretty sure I've got a spare DVD drive or two you can have, they are just sat there doing nothing right now, will test them before hand though make sure they are working.

Then I guess with the parts Danny has it is just a case and USB 3 controller card.

Regarding cases

is a hell of a value chassis, I built a system in one for a friend a couple weeks back and I was shocked at the build quality and features given the price of it.

Motherboard -ga-p35c-ds3r
Ram 4gb - Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3
Processor - Q6600
USB 3.0 PCI card - Later (find one that isn't pci-e)
DVD drive - ?
Graphics card - 8800gts?
power supply - Corsair HX520?
HDD - ?
Case - Casecom 6788 All Black Case
0s - windows 7 64 - i will get the on from software for students asap

This is where it is up to in my head so far

HDD might be a pain if you buy a new one. Flooding in Thailand has stopped supply of HDD's... So they're all expensive, in online stores anyway. You might have better luck in a retail store.

thinking this for the HDD as i already store all my files on a external drive so this would just run my OS, adobe and Microsoft programs.
going with this for boot speed, but you guys think i would be better off getting a larger standard drive then I will listen to some suggestions

Edit: is SSD complicated to set up... this looks complicated :/
