Overclocking useless?

Messing around with my new rig, I gave me gpu a small 25 mhz overclock, and brought my cpu to 3.8ghz, and i tested with the RE5 benchmark which I use for most of my test, and only gained about 2fps. I'm not into benching or bragging out a huge overclock I just want solid performance when I game, so for gaming is overclocking my gpu or cpu more kind of pointless?

There's usually a gain of performance in some respect... but don't expect your system to instantly double framerate or something. A small overclock like that gaining 2FPS is a win in my book.

well why would you even want to overclock that, should max any and everything out to date just fine.

and do you mean .25ghz, which is 250mhz.

250MHz on the GPU would be a massive OC.

At dirtbikeryzz:
in games the i7 would not be a bottleneck in games at stock speed so when you overclock it will not make all that much of a difference. The GPU is the real workhorse there. Use a CPU benchmark to test the real difference that you CPU OC has made. Not a gaming benchmark.

The 25MHz that you gave it is, like you said, a small OC. the 2 FPS you gained is reasonable for that OC. If you pushed it more you will start to see the difference. Like jonny mentioned, with a 580 you are probably maxing it anyway.

oops, coulda sworn it was cpu, which would be a minor overclock and would prob get a similar result i guess if it was the 250 i thought he meant.

Well maybe I'll see how high I can get this cpu, right now its at 3.8ghz, and with prime95 temp hits 56c max. I have the voltage set to manual, and added a tiny bit, but I just read you can go to around 4.1ghz with voltage on auto, can anyone confirm that?

Edit: I set the core voltage to auto, and bumped it up to 4ghz, Prime95's only ran for 15min but I'll let it run all night, temp so far hit 60c max on %100 load. CPU-Z shows core voltage at 1.200-1.208, no idea what temps are good or what voltage or anything so just let me no whats good, and bad please.

i wouldn't want it over 65, like 75 is the "max" recomended or something like that, but generally if it hits 70 it's too hot.

56c is just fine. I would probably quit OCing once you start to hit mid 70s in while stress testing. looking around on other forums I was getting the idea that 75c would be ok for daily use as 93c is the absolute max. I would try to keep it in the 60's when gaming.

Don't leave the voltage on auto. It will take more voltage than is necessary for the CPU to be stable at that clock speed. Do what you were doing before and bump it little by little. That will yield the best results.
