should I d/L Virtual Box or MS Virtual PC 2007 for Linux?

I have read good things about Virtual Box. But don't know much about MS Virtual PC 2007. Would like to install Linux for first time ever. Also not sure which version to get, but I can look into that on Wikipedia or something. Want to learn Linux, not just get it cuz it's open-source and free. I'd get the version that requires payment if I really had to. Which one of these virtual machines would be the best for Linux? I would prefer not to do a dual-boot. (Oh yeah, and I have Win. 7 Professional 64-bit, not 32-bit).

Virtual Box is a lot better than Virtual PC.

As for Linux, go with Ubuntu, Fedora, or Linux Mint. Those are the top three I'd recommend for beginners.

Thanks voyagerfan99. One more thing. Have 4 gigs of RAM. My graphics are embedded, so no worries there. So should I just allocate the minimum amount of RAM that Ubuntu, Fedora, or Linux Mint requires, or is there a minimum and recommended amount just like with Windows operating system requirements?

You've got 4GB to work with. I'd allocate anywhere from 1GB to 2GB.

As for what distro of linux to try,Theres so many...I like Opensuse personally,But Linux mint and of course Ubuntu are great too.

Okay, d/Led Linux Mint iso. Now do I d/L VirtualBox for Windows hosts since my main OS is Windows 7 or do I d/L VirtualBox for Linux hosts since I'll be using VirtualBox for Linux on my Windows PC?

I think I'll be done with questions after this.

Thanks.

I have downloaded Virtual box but can't see how to proceed further.
I have windows 7 home premium but someone suggested professional is required.
When it comes to installing XP inside Win 7 does XP have to be a full Retail copy.?

You only need to have Win 7 Pro or Ultimate in order to install MS XP Mode, VirtualBox doesn't have any similar restrictions. The advantage to installing XP Mode is that it includes a licensed copy of XP.

Once you have VirtualBox installed and it's console running, you create a new VM, then put your install disk in the CD ROM drive and then boot the VM just like you would a physical machine. You do need an installable (with it's own license) version of XP or whatever OS you want to install as the guest OS in the VM.

I have at the moment a desktop that came installed with XP and have added a full retail version of win 7 home premium in dual boot . So from your comments it must be the install disk that is failing to install into virtual box. The disk I have for XP is a recovery disk so might not be usable even although it is on the same motherboard.
My options may be to Upgrade 7 home premium to professional for XP mode or try to obtain a retail copy of XP with its own license to use virtual box. Thanks a bit clearer now.Going off now.
