can I get SATA 6Gb/s speeds w/ a mobo that supports 3Gb/s

Even though my mobo supports SATA 3Gb/s speeds, if I installed a PCIe card with SATA 6Gb/s capability, are there ones that have internal headers on them that could hook up to an internal SATA hdd just as fast? And would I get those speeds...or is everything dependent on the mobo bus speeds?

Thanks.

Let me stop you right there.

No.

6Gb/s is really a theoretical limit of the technology, current hard drives don't get close to it. You wouldn't see a performance difference going from SATA II.

Short and to the point. I guess I don't have to worry about blowing dough on a new PCIe card and SATA III hard drive then. I can just purchase a new SATA II hard drive...a new hard drive, that's all I wanted. Just figured if I could get faster speeds, I'd ask. Thanks for answering. Happy Thanksgiving.

Do you need more space or do you just want faster?
SSD

Really I'm just concerned about space right now. I never thought I'd use up 1 TB so quickly, especially after my first computer having only a 3.1 GB hard drive back in 1998 =) and I'm really only half-way there now, but I know I'm gonna need more space fairly soon.

I thought about getting a SSD for my OS mainly. I'm not dissatisfied with the startup though...likely because I'm leaving my PC on overnight more and more often. I used to be one that would power it down before I went to bed every night and power it back up in the morning. If SSD's main purpose is for faster OS startup speeds, then there's really no point in me getting one. I've also heard that SSDs have a shorter shelf-life than HDDs. I suppose I'd have to learn more before I really made a conscious decision to choose SSD over a HDD.

Looking at SATA drives on Tigerdirect right now. I know Intellipower only refers to Western Digital drives, but does anyone know why they're so expensive if their RPM speeds are dwarfed by 7200 RPM drives, considering I read their speed is usually between 5400-5900 RPMs?

Thanks for the responses so far.

This is true of mechanical hdds but you could take advantage of the 6G SATA ports if you went with a good ssd.

Two in RAID can easily saturate a 6GB/s port. It's not outside the realm of possibility.

Last I checked you only used one SATA drive per port even in RAID

RAID or no RAID shouldn't change the read/write speed of the individual drive. Right now it looks like fastest SATA drives hit right around 4Gb/s so they're getting pretty close.
