Graphics card advice

Hi, I'am looking for some advice on graphics cards. I had a dell 4600 Dimension and it was fine for what I needed which is listening to music and surfing the net. I was recently given a Dell Dimension 5000 which seemed to me to be a step up. The machine is much quieter and the memory is much much cheaper however when I connect my own monitor up to it, it wont recognise it and I it wont allow me to set it to the best resolution possible. Even when you go into the device manager it just says it's the standard monitor and I can change it. I tried taking the graphics card out the old machine but it doesn't fit!!! My old card was a 128MB DDR NVIDIA GEFORCE FX 5200 and the the card that is in the machine now is a RADEON X300 Series 128Mb. Can anyone tell me what would be a suitable replacement just for watching the odd movie etc maybe for HD if I change my monitor in the future.

Thanks

Right click on you Desktop

Select "Screen Resolution"

Up in the area that shows your monitors, click detect

Under the Display drop down menu, see if there are multiple selections.

If so, change to the other one and see if it will install the driver

From that point, i believe you can configure it to your liking

On a side note, your graphics chip may not be able to handle the new resolution. What is the RES of the new and old monitor?

Hi

I've tried that but but it thats not what I see when I right click on the desktop unless I'm missing something. The new res is 1024 x 768 whilst the old settings on with the other machine were 1920 x 1440 I think.

Thanks
