Hello,

This years Black Friday Deals on Newegg are pretty awesome. I've noticed a few parts that have good discounts and I am interested in them; however I need to know if I will see a noticeable difference, performance wise, if I replace my current parts with these. Essentially, I want to know your opinion on whether or not it pays to upgrade.

Edit: I will mainly use it for gaming. Otherwise it will also be used for pretty much everything else as well, such as surfing the web, word processing, etc. But mostly gaming.

My current parts are:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 2.66GHz

XFX 750i SLI nForce Socket 775

OCZ SLI 4GB DDR2

They will be replaced with the following parts:

Core i5 2500K LGA 1155 at Micro Center for $150.

The following Motherboards are all candidates, I don't know which one to choose:

GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3P at Newegg for $140.

GIGABYTE GA-Z68XP-UD3 at Newegg for $110.

ASUS P8P67 PRO (REV 3.1) at Newegg for $145.

Found this awesome deal on RAM:

PNY XLR8 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) at Newegg for $34.

And since the CPU is unlocked and this cooler is cheap and looks cool:

COOLER MASTER V6 GT at Newegg for $30.

So all in all, were looking around $300 to $350. And almost all come with that "Iron Egg" deal with free shipping and a 60 day return policy.

And like I said, is it worth it? Will I notice a performance increase? Let me know. Thanks.

then either of the gigabyte boards, both for brand (their support is a little better and same quality as asus for the mobo itself), but if you change mobos unless you have a retail copy you will have to get a new copy of windows which is 100.

Ok, I was not aware that I would have to re-install Windows. It's a good thing you mentioned it because I'd probably be posting back here in a week or so if you hadn't!

I have a copy of Vista 64-bit back when I first built it in 2009, I assume that's what your talking about? So I could just make a Backup of my current PC, install the motherboard, install Vista, and then recover the Backup?

And do you know if I will see a performance increase? Is it worth $350?

sort of depends on what you are doing to how much of a benefit you will see. But if you bought the oem version of vista then that is locked to the other mobo, and you must get a new one, if it is the retail version it can be transfered to a new mobo.

It's main use is gaming, however I do pretty much everything on it. Surf the web, word processing, music, all that stuff. The majority of the time these days though, is spent on Skyrim. :P

And I think I understand about the OS issue. OEM computers are ones like Dell and HP, correct? Whereas I bought a copy of Vista from Newegg, so I am able to re-install it.

Pretty much if the OS came in a fancy box it's retail but if it came in a DVD case type thingy it's oem :)

Oh, then I think I may not be able to do it. All I remember is that I bought it from TigerDirect or Newegg some years back and that I think it came in a clear plastic DVD case. Similar to what you described. The fancy box being like what the Microsoft Office Suites come in?

I had not planned on having to buy a new OS as well. So unfortunately, I think this upgrade will have to wait. Besides, my master plan was to wait until the next version of Windows comes out and buy that along with an SSD (hopefully they are cheaper), and then buy parts like the ones we talked about. Doing it all at once seems to be easier.

Thanks for all the help. I'd have been pretty angry in a couple days if I hadn't come here first!
