Laptop Upgrade NEED HELP!!

I want to replace my laptop motherboard. The main reason is because I like the way the case of my laptop is. It's also rather large compared to recent models which I believe means I can have a better motherboard fit in this case.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron E1705. It's a 2007 model if I remember correctly and if you look it up on google, you can see how large the laptop is.

What I'm looking for is a modern motherboard that can max out to 4-8GB RAM and can use an Intel i3 or i5 processor.

Please give me all the suggestions you can, I am looking to spend about $600 and maybe a little bit more if needed. Tell me if my budget is too small or too much as well. This would be my first time in doing something like this so please go into full detail.

For the most part it's nearly impossible to upgrade a laptop mobo, they are proprietary and made to fit in specific cases.

Unless there was another Dell model, with the identical layout, that was compatible with the other parts, your gonna have to live with what you have, buy a new laptop, or jump to building a custom desktop that will give you what you desire.

Well thing is, I've grown accustom to using the touchpad that this case has. So I'd either have to find a way to salvage the parts and somehow design my own, or I can still try to find another motherboard...

I know I'm weird but I'm also nostalgic and I would love to be able to keep using my first laptop and have it look the same as it does already.

I have heard though about people having a 64-bit mobo in this same model so there is at least 1 type of mobo that can fit into this. I just can't seem to find it and I'm not experienced enough to figure it all out..

I get what you are saying and the passion you have for the machine you've been using for a long time, but I'd seriously save yourself the headache, time, effort, and money...only to find out that it wont work.

The only possible thing you are referring to regarding 64-bit is a different CPU which can run 64-bit operating system.

I hope someone else can chime in here cause I'm not doing the best job of trying to sell my viewpoint.

If its the physical size of the machine that is your main thing...ASUS, for example sells some very large, heavy, bulky high end machines that would absolutely destroy that DELL in every way and give you an upgrade that you will never get with the DELL.

Here is a picture of the motherboard and cooling system from a 2009 HP DV7 that I just disassembled to salvage the CPU and some other pieces from.--Just to show you only 2 pieces...

There are literally 40 other pieces, parts, and all the screws and other hardware--its honestly a maze of stuff inside laptops that are custom by the manufacturer to fit in a compact space.

Ah I see.. Yep it's gonna be a project and a half lol.

I can't make your mind up for you..I just can tell you what I know from experience.

All I can say is if you are dead set on this-- take pictures and share them with us.:)
