i have a MSI H61M-P21 B3
2 DIMMs support for ddr3-1066/1333 mhz up to 16 gb max
i only have 2 gb i would like to have 8 gb
does it matter what ddr3 4gb that i use or do i have to use specific ones for the unit itself.
or would it be better to have 16gb?

Well it depends on what your doing on the computer. Having more memory will only help if your using more then you have and hitting pagefile. In general 4gb is the most a average computer user will use or need. But yes it wil support any DDR3 1333. Just pick them with the lowest voltage and timing. Where are you ordering from?

16GB and even 8GB is huge overkill unless you are rendering, doing HD video editing or large-scale picture editing.

As stranglehold said, 4GB is enough for the normal user. With that said, if you look at the price of memory it isn't a whole lot more for 8GB which may not affect the system now, but will future proof it for when more than 4GB is necessary, which will probably be in the near future.

I haven't ordered them yet. I do require more ram most likely 8gb due to my work and schooling. which brand should i get and where from? or is it best to go to a computer store?
unfortunetaly im not the best with working out these things.

G. skill and corsair are the favorites. Look for 1333mhz RAM at 1.5 volts and try to get the lowest timings possible.

Hi! I'm reading the posts and maybe it's best if I just continue this topic in stead of opening a new one. I've started to use my old old computer again, installed Windows 7 and the computer is slooooooooow, it's driving me crazy. I don't even remember the specifics and I'm not there at the moment to look them up, but I bought that desktop like 8 years ago. My question is if more RAM would speed the computer up and if yes, how should I know which one is compatible ( what exactly must I check )?

you should start your own thread.

More RAM will only help if you have so little RAM that it is depending on the virtual RAM (a hard drive area set aside by windows that acts like RAM). You really need at least 2GB on 32 bit and 4GB on 64 bit to run well (at least thats my opinion on it).

Being slow could also be the processor speed. That we can only tell with a detailed report of your hardware.

Why, unless your school work involves the examples I put previously (large image editing, video editing, rendering, writing large programs etc) then there is no need at all. I was on 4GB ~2 months back and upgraded to 8 purely because I got an excellent deal. There is virtually no performance gain with anything I do.

I would look at saving yourself money and going with 4GB instead of 8, unless you get the 8GB for not a whole lot more than the 4. For the sake of $10-15, it is worthwhile future proofing, even if you don't see the performance today.

Are you running a 32 or 64 bit OS though? As you are on 2, if your system came bundled with an Operating System, it will probably only be 32 Bit, meaning you will have to purchase a new copy of a 64 bit OS and perform a fresh installation.

Upgrading RAM depends purely on your system usage. I would suggest you to upgrade your RAM to 4 GB. I don't think you would be using applications or programs that need RAM of 8 GB or more.
